Living in Scandinavia
show user profile  Redturtle
Hey guys, I haven't been around MF in a while, but I know a lot of you are from Scandinavia. I currently live in the US and was thinking about traveling a bit, maybe living and working some where in Scandinavia for a while. I've always wanted to learn another language.

Can any of you offer some insight into how difficult it would be to get a work permit / visa to head out that way? I've flirted with this idea for years, but I feel like pulling the trigger. Where is a good place for an English speaker to find work in the region?

I'm open to most sorts of work. I have a bachelors degree in the Fine Arts, so I know that woudn't open many doors, but I could teach English (or Art) and I have experience in Sales as well. Assuming I really wanted to do this, what's the best path? Which countries do you think offer the most opportunities to foreigners looking for work? Any insight is welcomed, thanks

Chris

I like the idea! Been thinking about doing the same.

I live in Norway, but I have no information regarding a work permit or visa. I would imagine it's not too difficult.

Though, I do not recommend Norway for 3D work, or such. It's difficult to get into the market, and if you do, the salary is not great here.

I've been in the industry for about 4 years now, with a Bachelor degree.
My starting salary was about 3500 USD / Month (After tax it was about 2700 USD) . I'm getting more now though, but it's really tough in the beginning (And we're working with the oil industry, which should provide a good income. But it's still tough).

That might not sound too bad at all, but if you calculate the cost of living here you'll quickly see the difference.

Some examples:
1 month rent in a 35sqm apartment is about 1600 USD (here in Stavanger).
Food for 1 month (if you prepare it all yourself) is about 500 USD
My expenses with an old car just to get to work is roughly 500 USD per month.

Already there I've spent my salary just to be alive :P hehe

But it might be different at other workplaces.

Come to S.E. Asia instead. Super cheap here, and there's a bit of work too (at a super-cheap salary). But there are super cheap hookers, so that's alright.

^As long as there are super cheap hookers I suppose that makes everything alright.
