Linux vs OS/2
show user profile  Nik Clark
Neither, I've got work to do, I use Windows. Macs work equally well.

Truth be told, I love all operating systems and all computers.

I use Windows because it's the easiest for me, and it has the best options for games and software (at least for me).

My computer used to have a boot menu with
--- Windows 2000
--- Windows Vista
--- Ubuntu Linux
--- Solaris Workstation
--- OSX
--- OS/2

I realised that I enjoy installing them and figuring them out more than I use them. I'm about to convert my laptop to Ubuntu/Windows 8. Moslty because I'm bored.

go for 64 bit ubuntu if you want to try soft or maya on it. the default download is 32 bit.

I have to kill and re-launch explorer every time I boot up my home PC. True story.

AS, I don't think I will ever install another 32bit OS. Drivers and software have finally got to the point where 64bit is almost the norm. Thanks for the tip though.

Dave, that sounds like a pain in the ass. You could try making changes in msconfig and seeing if it's a driver or startup issue.

Time for a fresh install I think Dave. Putting it off on my work machine, so much crap on here installed over the years!

Ah it's all good, there's probably a thousand things wrong with it, for one... I built it myself back in 2007 and it's undergone major surgery in both hardware and software since. Just saving my pennies for a new one, really want to get Windows 7 on it too.

Personally, I think Windows 7 (at least from my perspective) is almost perfect. There are some stupid things it does, but it's the best OS I've used daily. It makes Vista look like WindowsME.

I'd love 7 too if I could access windows as textures like ms can do. got a workaround but won't be as fast as direct access.

Hope they expose that feature on 8. shooting themselves in the foot if third party devs can't make full use of the system. we just move on elsewhere.

Not giving you programmers access to stuff within the OS does seem stupid. Is it a security issue, like WebGL, in Microsofts point of view? I know they don't like things that can crash the OS.

no, it's keeping stuff back for their guys to give them a competive edge.

or an oversight. - might genuinely not realize some apps need this but as I've shown you before others have asked.

also webgl isn't a security issue. that's bs.

pfft just got osx 10.7 lion set up and running smoothly on my PC that I built a while back, runs really well except I still struggle to get used to that god famed mouse acceleration!

I've still got windows 7 running as well, waiting for battlefield 3 :)

what it really comes down to is - there are many things that windows can do and other OS's cant while there are very few things that other OS's can while windows cant. Most of the time using another platform just means handicapping yourself no matter how dark the turtleneck or blue the jeans are.
