Link the meshes into a hierarchy

Hi Everyone.

I haven't involve very much in 3D modeling using 3D max. I'm a newly started game programmer and using XNA game studio.

I'm having trouble with 3D models I've downloaded from Google 3D warehouse. They have thousands of bones, where I only want to control few of them. For example Tank model I've downloaded yesterday have around 1500 bones. Most of their names are like Mesh* so its hard to track which mesh object it refers to by its name. I only want to control tires , turret , cannon of the tank , but its hard to find them in the large bone array.

Now I want to merge/collapse all the bits and pieces that make up each of the main parts of the tank into individual meshes. Then link the meshes into a hierarchy, and name them appropriately ("chassis" "turret" etc). Then it will be easy to find and control each entire piece of the tank.

Can any one tell me how to acomplish using 3D max, a web resource which can guide me would be great. Isuru Anuranga Wijesinghe,
