lighting

I have just started using max recently...so not experienced at all!!! I am haveing trouble regarding lighting. when i put lights in the scene... i can't see any of my materials unless i render... the scene goes completely black..even if i add more lights.. I can't see any of my mapping or anything. Is there a function that allows the scene to be 'normal' ??
any help would be appreciated. :)

Have you gone through the user manual?
Or any of the numerous tutorials that came with MAX?

have you tried things like moving the light so that it would shine on your object?
What type of light?
If a spot, are you aiming it at your object?

yea... have been through the tutorials... i am using various lights as it is an interior that i am trying to light up. there are quite a few vray lights,a spot light (shining fromm the exterior into the building) and an omni light... i have tried using different intensities, and have moved the lights, have changed the type of lights but my scene still remains black...however when i render the lighting is fine...? I just can't see what i'm doing when i need to change mapping etc.
unfortuanatly the manual was unable to help me with this situation. :(
