anyone here know their way around LA?

I'm thinking of moving to LA for 3 months next year, and at the same time take some classes at Gnomon.
located here:

i've started looking into places to live.
Is this an area to rent in? Any advise on good areas not too far away from the school?
We need two bedrooms. And it would be nice with maybe a small garden/porch, and a pool.
Not too far away from caf├ęs, restaurants etc. And hopefully in a somewhat safe area.
We can fork out around 5000$ a month.
Any idea what something like these small houses would cost to rent? if it's possible to rent here at all...

Can anyone recommend any online sites to look for houses?

My only knowledge of LA is from movies and TV, so I'm grateful for any kind of help on this!
Btw, anyone been to Gnomon?

thanks Bolts! appreceate the help.

Whats this area around the school called?
And where would you choose to live if you were in town for 3months like this?
We're not going for fulltime studies, but mostly to experience the life in LA.

You know anything about the classes at Gnomon? Or maybe a better school?
I want to combine some drawing classes with zbrush, and maybe a class in Nuke.

santa monica or venice or up in the hollywood hills if you can afford it.

I stayed in an apt. complex crescent heights/fountain which is fairly close in W. Hollywood.

W.Hollywood = g@y area, especially near Santa Monica Blvd, but if you are or don't much care, it's a good location near Sunset which is great for nightlife - clubs, resturants, live music, etc.

Thanks for the info AS.
And thanks dr.J, but if you read from my post that i have a drug problem, i guess i must have misspelled something...

Nothing against gay party areas, but i think i'd like a quiet nights sleep more. restaurants, cafes, live music are good, but could do without the nightclubs.
Maybe Venice/santa monica could be something. Just been flipping through californication, and that seems like an ok place to live.

btw, craigslist seems a bit dodgy to use when ur located half way around the world.
would prefer to rent through a well-known agency.
Any such you know of?

i would suggest venice and samo as well; look up archstone and see if they have anything for 3 months or so; they're a massive housing corp so it's solid in those terms; outside of that there's always a cornucopia of hostels that you could stay at for a few weeks till you found a place if you're worried about not being around while you look for a place.

problem with venice/sm is the commute.

the freeway tends to get congested around rush hours.

outside rush hour, sunset all the way from sm thru west hollywood is a nice drive.

given what you've said, a small place in the hollywood hills is probably the best lifestyle choice.

sm/venice is nice, but considering practicalities, it's a fair trek there/back every day + taxi, etc. back if you want to go drinking after work with the lads. la public transport sux.

W. Hollywood has its quiet spots too. You don't have to live right on top of the clubs. The surrounding areas as you get away from the strip probably gets a bit cheaper.

I was out there for about a year. did half in santa monica in a private apt. 5 blocks back from the beach off ocean park blvd & half in hollywood here :

think I'm starting to miss the place a little. maybe.

that's a bit much but 2k is what you'd find avg in LA for that size.
