Kurt one day... 28-300 L USM IS lens.
show user profile  StevegeK
Hey guys

Except for 700 pics of a photo-assignment of a school-concert in near pitch-blackness... I couldnt play with my newest lens a lot.

Anyway it's from the Canon L series... USM focus engine, and it has a 3 stop stabiliser wich is amazing! Even more amazing than that of the 24-105 and 100-400...

To give you an impression what 28mm to 300 in one lens gives...

Both of these taken at the same location with the same lens. The one on the left is a 100% crop but still it shows you how wide it goes to acceptable zoom.

It's a heavy lens, 1.6 kg's and with my 5D MKII + grip it's a fitness excersise on it's own.. but one that is well worth it. Even at darker exhibitions I did quite a good job... with the amazing sabiliser I could do 1/50th second FROM HAND while STANDING.

More to come soom.. but Kurt thanks for making me go out all the way to fricking Belgium again, selling 2 lenses.. to get your suggestion. One day you may hold it my friend... one day... :)

O God even at the internetz I built up a reputation I wont be able to lose.

On a serious note, I offered something at marktplaats *Dutch version of ebay* and when some-one wanted to buy the 24-105 lens.. he asked:

Read you dropped your 5DMKII in the water, did it have this lens on at the time?

MY GOD internet goes fast!!!

its deff not crispy, however that was taken at 1/100 I believe and it was cold as **** so its FAR from ideal. Will do some quality tests soon. :)

hahaha, holy moly, nice one mate
i was going on about this lens to you like an insane person not realizing i had sparked your insane switch lol
selling 2 very nice lenses like the 24-105,100-400 is like going on a vietcong minefield line-dancing course, but well done, i like ppl who do these insane, impulsive, from-the gut things and make a difference, they are not many on this smelly planet..

quite amazed by the shot though, i might go for this lens after all, argh, choices :)
in any case i'll be wanting to see more shots plz !

do you find a lot of deformation CA and unsharpness at some focal lenghts ?
it is said to be a bitch at 24 and 300 which is normal with such a wide range

anyway gratz and good luck with that awesome lens!

Haha thanks for the flattery. :)

Seriously the deformation... moa its def acceptable. I haven't had a chance to really play with it.

If you print at A4 size tops or print it poster size to look at it from 1-2 meters: you wont notice anything. It's sharp, has a HUGE range and the stabiliser is just... pure love.

Yesterday at the concert I shot it was just marvelous to switch from overview shots to super up close shots in a matter of miliseconds... amazing.

Some say the quality of this lens is better than the 100-400 and even than the 24-105.. others say those 2 are by far superior... I dont know.

What I DO know for sure is that it does influence the way I shoot, what I shoot and what I bring with me. It DOES change the content of the pics and position... and that it is a professional L lens: trust me you do notice that.

I prefer the composition/content of the pictures by far above the detail when it's 100% cropped. Because when do we 100% crop (except for in examples and lens tests hahaha). I never do it.

:)
I might do some ideal shots tomorrow and post links to 100% full rez images. Kurt if you DO seriously want to test it, you're always welcome here. Still the travel by car would cost quite some... Gheh.

Sorry guys but for an L QUALITY all round lens these are SWEET. Content wise not superb... but working with it is GREAT. Its just awesome to walk around without swapping lenses and being able to shoot all of these.

I fell in love with the 28-300.
It's a rebellious lens. Trust me it is. Peace.

Thanks guys! As far as I know this girl has like 2-3 pics of her self... 100% unrecognizable. She's very photo-shy so having the oppertunity to shoot one pic of her was rare. Also it was snowing so I'm quite sure her hair was clean at the time. =)

Sensor cleaning AHHH just had it cleaned! Think it's on the lens, that bastard does need some cleaning... :P
