Keyshot - PSA
show user profile  9krausec
It probably doesn't pay to post this since most of us are professionals that use professional software (not Keyshot) or are aspiring to go into the field at a professional capacity, but I figured I would just in case there were a few of you who have considered the software for a quick turn around in your rendering pipeline (usually for products).

Do not buy this software

This is the most buggy and frustrating software I have ever had the displeasure of working with. Moving away from it at work to a Maya/Vray solution in the near future (can't come soon enough).

It takes a lot to really get me going on something... but I've wasted too much time dealing with this software's bugs to not let it go uninformed to the community here. It pains me that zBrush has declared Luxion's Keyshot their "official" renderer.

The pros-

-Easy to produce decent results
-Converts Solidwork's Assemblies well (most of the time when it doesn't glitch out)
-Decent out of the box material library. Materials can be customized to fit your needs.

The cons-

-Pretty much doing all your work in Vray RT (One viewport only.. Vray RT functionality)
-Grossly simplified to the point of making things more complicated and frustrating
-Crashes frequently
-Does not save all time (really... what the hell is up with that)
-Glitchy as hell network rendering
-Many of the features work only half the time
-Manipulation of objects in the viewport is a joke. Between the VrayRT-ness of everything I can barley see what's going on half the time. Transform tool is buggy as all hell.
-Scaling during importing is worthless
-Most support ends in this, "We just came out with an update patch, try that"... Software has bugs, yes, but I feel like I'm beta testing Keyshot for the most part and trouble shooting for the company to attempt to fix later on... The product is far from dependable.

Enough of my bitching. Just don't do it. If someone mentions Keyshot walk away (unless you are doing really simple stupid renders of boxes or something...)

And yes I'm a bit salty right now.

dunno about keyshot, but thanks for making me look for some info about it- stumbled across some news about zb4r7
keyshot is getting some compatability with zb- a bespoke version of keyshot is being made to buy seperately and use with a bridging functionality from zb- i don't really use the zb rendering abilities to any extent but knowing the company if they're implimenting something it will be solid
but, the thing that interested me most- and which i was prompted to post this is the new poly modelling tools in zb which look very cool indeed
have a look isn't it:
also they answer some questions about keyshot there too
64bit zbrush- yes please

I think Keyshot probably does make sense in zBrush for quick WIP renders to figure out where your project is going. Really only for simple, simple stuff.

Polygon modeling in zBrush eh? That sounds fascinating!

Got a friend at work who does pretty nice renders with it... though he has to make a skeleton inside the head and lower the opacity of the outer mesh and add a red hue just to do the sss. And that should tell you everything you need to know about keyshot.

What about marmoset? It's fast and easy and useful to show off previews on the fly in realtime... but I think it gave shit results the last time I used it (Marmoset Toolbag 2).

"pretty nice renders"

not too much offense meant, but that usually means to actually read:

"shitty renders"

Just saying...

[edit] Actually, I think the car renders are with marmoset... can confirm later, if you like, lunch time right now.

I still don't like Keyshot, but I dislike it a whole lot less after getting off the horn with a rep. Was told that Keyshot 7 will-

Have Linux support for render nodes
Have Deadline integration

This makes it far easier to integrate Keyshot users into system as we can all utilize the same hardware for rendering. Dividing up our servers into team Vray and team Keyshot was really annoying....

Keyshot still erks me due to stability issues, limitations, run-and-gun development and it's watered downed nature when compared to real production software, but this is the first time I'm 'excited' for a new version of Keyshot (for whatever reason we refer to it as KeithShot in the office).

Still not going to use it, but with KS7 it should be easier to manage.

That is all....

It was told to me that the functionality would be in KS7. KS7 has not been released yet so no, I have not tried it yet.

Just interesting news (for me at least) and wanted to share. I no longer feel bad about posting shit to Maxforums randomly after the Mandela Effect thread. Haha.
