I put this knife in my scannner and now I'm trying to model it.
Started with the grip, and I actually was moving pretty fluid setting up the basic shape. I'm running into trouble at the top of the grip. The shape tapers off and the top of the grip and like flattens out.
this is the flat part i'm talking about on the grip
this is my basic shape
this is me almost getting the flat shape I want, but my problem is it's making the rest of the grip too flat with the cuts that I make. if I leave the middle line that devides down the edge, that line is way too defined...
so i'm just curious how you experienced guys would go about this.

you could just end the cut below the new contour rather than having the cut encircle the entire grip as the shape of the grip will never animate or change this should work just a thought

thanks for the advice that worked nice. i'll post pictures later when i get more progress... i need to learn to see better topography for quads and stuff...even trying to copy the lines you made i some how screwed it up a bunch before getting it right!

3D Modelling: Keeps kids with big knives off the streets! (and into their rooms, modelling their big knives).
Looking good thus far, be interesting to see updates, as the handle doesn't show a lot of talent... but the blade, that's either going to be a doozy, or a nightmare for you!

Yeah...talent....[looks around] But I'm working on the blade now. I'll play with it a bit tonight after work.
I can't just smooth this blade so I'm going to have to figure out a game plan. Suggestions welcome.

quads are most important when the topology of the mesh will change (animate) if it is a hard mesh (object that does not deform) you can get away with tris and if hidden 5+ sided polies you don't have to use a smoothing modifier you could just use smoothing groups

guys 10 of you told me to chamfer...so i've been chamfering..but i'm screwing this up. i'm gonna regroup and start over tomorrow...tonight i'm beaten.
if anyone wants to hit me with some chamfer strategy please do!
i just might jam this knife in my brain!

ok, idk how new you are so im going to assume you dont know about chamfering at all so dont be offended.
Chamfering basically takes 1 side, adn makes it 2, So anything rounded you want to chamfer, to give it more edges. dont chamfer everything at once, do one curve at a time.
