I'm pretty happy with this. If there's anything you don't like or feel could be improved let me know.
Cheers.

way to dark and moody for realism. also, check out the include/exclude lists for the candle lights - there's a lack of shadowing happening on certain items.

Okay, will look at that.
I also haven't touched the exposure settings. Might have a play around.

I think it's great. It could use a bit of color balancing and what Strat mentioned, but it's a nice image.

Its got the potential for a really nice scene. It just looks very cg/fake at the min.
The brick wall for example looks very fake.
Keep at it though, looks good.

Turn on the lights. That image has energy, don't waste it.

you don't create a romantic setting if you turn on the lights.
jeez - thought you were italian :P

By "turn on the lights," you mean make the lightbulbs bright(er)? Hope so, 'cause that's what I've done. I also displaced the bricks; excluded/included objects from light sources (though I couldn't get the napkin holders to give off a shadow for some reason); adjusted the VrayExposure and turned on Global GI. I think it looks better(ish).
And here's a different angle so I can show off my sign. Though it's a crap angle, I should have moved the camera higher.
TBH, I prefer the first renders, though maybe my monitor settings aren't correct.

I prefer the first renders too. I thought it looked pretty good. was a bit dark could use more ambient light but otherwise was good. If you keep the second set of renders turn down the candles lights a bit.

If anyone can help, here's my problem: The three lanterns are projecting nice shadows in my viewport but not in my render. I've had troubles with light placement, when I put the light inside the lightbulb it doesn't cast shadows or light even though the bulb is VrayLight or a glass material with full refraction. When I placed it outside the bulb I had troubles with light not projecting properly so I had to put another light above the bulb (though now I know about include/exclude lists).
So my questions are: 1. What material should be used for the lightbulb? 2. What light should I use (omni or VrayAmbient)? Though I found I have no control over far attenuation with VrayAmbient, it just acts like a global illuminator. 3. Where should the light be placed? Inside or outside the bulb. 4. Should I use RayTraced shadows or Vray shadows (if I were to use omni)?
Here's the viewport looking like how I want my render to look (with an exaggerated multiplier for demonstration purposes).
And here's the light settings + a small, crappy render (with no indirect Illumination).
