Irritating UI Glitch in Max 2009
show user profile  mattymoose
When I change between subobject modes in Max 2009, the UI glitches out for a second, it's really annoying. Has anyone else experienced this, and is it fixable?

Here's a video of the occurance:http://www.screencast.com/users/mattemuse/folders/Jing/media/17aa8535-b24e-4fa4-be77-f7e3ec247640

mine does the same, I thought it was normal?

what pisses me off more about max 2009, is the fact that it slows down over time, its like i have to restart max once every hour to maintain performance.

Oh man, its normal for the UI to glitch out? Thats not what I was hoping to hear. I don't know about 2009, but in 9.0 I could switch instantaneously between subobject selection modes with no glitching. I step through modes alot when I'm modeling, damn thats annoying.

Hah! Mine does it too and I've never really noticed it. Which I imagine is because I tend to use hotkeys when switching sub-objects, and my eyes are focused on the viewports when doing so.

I checked in max 9 and, yeah, the UI dissapears and reappears when I switch between subobjects - i swear this never used to happen! - but it only blinks once, whereas in 2009 it blinks multiple times (tough to see in the video due to the jing framerate) and takes much longer to switch.

And yes, I always use 1-2-3-4-5 to switch while looking at the viewport, doesn't prevent this from pissing me off unfortunately.

"and takes much longer to switch."

This is because Autodesk have enabled "run time type information" in recent max builds (2009 & 2010) which slows it down noticably. I've already raised this with them (not concerning this issue - as a general point). This was a poor engineering change in my opinion. You don't need RTTI. There are faster solutions (earlier versions of max didn't need it).

Something similar,

mine always crashes often when the scene become heavy. The machine has 4gb ram and is a 64 bit machine.

Feel they have unnecessarily made it heavy. I still love max 8. Great version that.
