ipod touch.... worth it?
show user profile  Chris123643
just thought i would ask you good people at max fourms what you think of the ipod touch, im sure a few of you have one. Been thinking of getting one... im going travelling next year, been looking at the stuff you can do with them and have been quite impressed. Then i looked at the cost and almost fell out of my chair!

been back and forth so many times...what are your thoughts on the touch?

love mine to bits. use it daily all day for radio. games are fab. video is fab. looks sexy as fek.
has no phone (obviously) which doesn't bother me personally, as does the lack of camera.
I'm fully un-jailbroken, which to me is a great plus :)

the biggest peeve for me is lack of mobile broadband. the Wifi and internet service is fabulous, but you must be within wifi range.

other than that i love it, and would easily buy one again tomorrow if mine broke. infact, i might buy a new one anyway just because how drop dead gorgeous they are.

And this week i've found a great new use for them - i'm starting to take them to business meetings to display our show reals and pdfs/imagery instead of lugging around a laptop. Clients think it's a great gimmik and marketing magnet :)

wow, do you work for apple? haha... might have persuaded me... how many GB'age you dealin? because dwelling on the price, the increases are dramatic... i do plan to have movies on there, would say i have stupid amounts of music like some people though.

no, not an apple employee :P just love my ipod touch.

I've got a 1st generation 8 gig jobby - the most oldest and basicest. but other than 1 or 2 minor differences it's basically the same as the 2nd gen Touch, other than, basically, a built in speaker.
The 3rd gen Touch should be available in 1/2 a year or so, but obviously know one knows when and what it'll do and contain. who cares?

On my 8 gig i have about 1.5 gig of apps (applications like games, utilities, extras etc etc, generally around 59p or 99cents each), around 1.5 gig of video (eg, a complete starwars movie is around 650 mb) and the rest is generally music. i have around 80-100 albums. i dont listen to music much at all though. I think for me personally in hindsight a 16 gig model would be better, but next time :)
I only tend to put on it what i want or use. why put on 1000's of albums and movies if you'll hardly ever watch/listen to them? just my choice.

but, like the iphone, the touch is so fun to use, especially with the App Store. i wouldn't be without mine now :)

Apple are fairly new to me, as in i've only been acquainted with their range over the last 2 years.
My opinion of them, their software and their hardware is this (not intending to start any wars here) -

Apple company - personally, found they off a great service, but are very 'cultish' and expect to mould you the way they want you to be moulded. everything's in-house so to speak. i have no nice or bad things to feel about them really. But, they do offer good sales and after sales service i've found.

Software - again, all 'in-house-ish'. very good and powerfull, but growing up in an XP environment has made me like it better. i like the mac os, but i'm just too used to Windows.

Hardware - fookin' great. makes pc's look like pieces of shite imo. The apple mac 8 core pro's are just to die for. expensiver, but solid and reliable and fast. not only that, but like nearly all other Apple hardware, it's worth the cost broken because it looks that damn sexy :)

They're great! Had an iPod Touch before switching to an iPhone. Both are jailbroken, which adds alot of possibilities.

I watch a new episode of the Clone Wars each day traveling to work.

Can't tell you how pleased I am with it!

( don't work for Apple either ( wouldn't mind though ))

I should get a sig

i've got an iphone 3g, and i have to say the touch/phone series are awesome.

most intuitive interface i've used since the sidekick 3, size is great (i only have 4 gigs of music), and having gps, the internet, microsoft exchange, the apps by my side at all times is essential.

the price point def makes it for successful 20 somethings and up, or younger with mommy and daddy paying the bill, but try one out for a week... if you dont like it, return it to apple and they'll happily refund you the full price.

trust me though when i say, you wont be returning it.

I would love to get an iTouch, but until Apple makes their products like iTouch/iPhone open so that we can decide what we want to put on it and run on it instead of what Apple decides for us all, no!

Oh by the way Apple is saying that jailbreaking their products is copyright infringement!!1!111

Anyone else think Apple has become what they espoused to be against in their own ad here made in the 80's?

Teon - you're not a million miles out, but to spite yourself just so not to own a Touch or Iphone is kinda dumb imo. ;)

yes, gets on my nerves too that Apple say you do things in our way and no one elses. you only put on those devices what we sanction. bit of a pisser i know, particularly since there's no Flash support either.

but fuk, it's a damn fine piece of kit in any event, that's head and shoulders more fun and usable than anything else around. I'm certainly not too proud to buy one. Apple do need to chill out, but fek, what do i care? and neither should you. if your pride's too big to stop you buying one then fine. it's not me missing out ;)

and to be fair to Apple, the choice and amount of apps available to download is HUGE!!!!

well there you have it... I'm convinced. still wince when i look at the price, but by the sounds of it i would consider it a good use of my hard earned cash.

Apple do have a tight hold over what gets put on it, but they are a business, if they see getting more money going down that road (which i assume they would be) then that's what they will do.
Slapped wrist for mentioning it but i will probably jailbreak it, ability of playing nes games on it would be too strong.

I would love it if it had GPS, as i said i am travelling next year, that would be handy, but an iphone is even more expensive, and don't like to be on contract. Would it be a possibility that apple bring out GPS hardware that plugs into the bottom? i have seen dodgy ones on the net of that already.

Chris - jailbreaking isn't illegal, even tho Apple disapprove. but it does invalidate your warrentee. I was jailbroken for months, but found things a lot more faster, stable and easier being all above board. in fact, easier is the key word. All JB is about is being able to customise - add new icons, backgrounds and game emulators. not up my street personally.

I'd say the scales are definitely tipped with more peeps who JB compared who dont. the choice is yours. As i say, i now like things just the way they are. it's not a taboo thing to do or talk about. installing warez games on it is another matter, which, like in 99% of forums, isn't talked about. but hey, thats your choice.

GPS isn't yet available, but might be in the next generation release. they're also talking about a mobile Flash release too. You can get small plug in devices that 'enhance' your ipod, but they aint really worth a hill of beans. Yuo, an iphone would suit better in this situation, but they certainly cost a monthly heavy fee, and are so much thicker and uglyer.

But yeah, the Touch is so much fun. I've already scanned the app store twice this morning and downloaded 3 (free) games.

umm, maybe ill abide by the rules and keep it un JB'ed... certainly for the first few months anyway... i would love to know if the 3rd generation has gps... i would have to wait if that was the case.

yeah. you wont know that until it's released which, going on past Apple experience, might be sometime around September. JB'ing is really easy to install and uninstall. but the only big advantage you'll probably gain is games.
