I know a few of you guys have iPads so before I go and get one I wanted to know a few things.

Can you transfer any AVi on to it? I.e a movie? Then plug iPad into your TV and watch it on your TV? If so is it easy to do? Or do you need to convert the video file first like you had to when you streamed videos to the Xbox or Wii.

Does the iPad output HD video to the TV? I am looking to get it for watching movies as currently I watch them over the home network using media libraries on windows 7 and the PS3. However I wondered if the iPad would be a simpler process of just plug and play.

Not pirated movies btw, movies I actually legally own and have copied to a hard drive from DVD.

You don't need to transfer the AVI file. It could stay on your computer and you could use an app like AirVideo which will play most any video format. It would play HD 720p

You'll also need to connect the Ipad to your TV.

i use air video which which allows me to keep the films on my HD and it will convert on the fly or convert ( all of this depends on the computer but mine plays smooth while converting on the fly. I then use a rgb cable to the tv, even some of the shitty films ( low res ) look ok on the tv. cable was bought from ebay

Ok cheers guys :) I think I need to get a network HD instead of an external one. Having to turn on my PC on all the time to make my external hd visible is a pain. Any recommendations?

with air video you need the software running on the pc though :/ and WD mybooks are ok and are cheap enough just dont go uploading massive files to them in one go as they dont like that

Ive had a buffalo linkstation for years - I'm not sure if it's any better than others though! I have lots of WD external harddrives so probably would be tempted to use them instead in the future anyway!

Just out of interest can the iPhone not do that too? I have one so I wonder if you can output video to your TV

the iphone (via ios5.x) can do exactly the same.

i really do find it that easy.

watching regular tv, films, playing games, doing apps, web browsing etc etc, anything i do on my ipad2 is mirrored exactly on my hd tv via the hdmi cable. i personally prefer the method of playing movies from the ipad rather than streaming off my main pc as i find having the ipad next to me whilst im watching much more easier and flexible rather than streaming from another room around the house.

So could either:

1) Make the iPhone see my network drive (How do I do this?) and then play the movies on my TV via a cable
2) Put the movies on my iPhone and plug it straight into the TV

Or do this on the iPad
