iPad file storage
show user profile  zeefusion
This might sound a little dumb but... How do you put files on the iPad i.e a PDF or word document? I assume iTunes is for music, video and pics only?

I know I can email myself the file and save it to the iPad but even then where does it get stored?

Then once they are on the iPad where do they go? How are they stored? Are they stored within an app? what if another app wants to open the file? Can it find it?

I haven't used dropbox, but I use Goodreader for all my PDFs. You sync them with iTunes by selecting the app. Will dropbox let me open up sync'd pdfs with Goodreader or let me use it to open PDFs?

Zee - where it's stored on your iPad isn't a concern. It's just stored. I personally like to email myself these files. When you open the file it'll give the option as to which compatible app you wish to open with.

My concern is the same as Kajico i think... If it is on dropbox can i open a file in another app? Will the app see the file?

We are l; looking to take iPads to trade shows as a sales tool. So acess to PDF presentations and powerpoints is key.

accessing pdf's isnt the concern. thats the easy bit. powerpoints is more of an issue.

powerpoints can easily be displayed on ipad of course, but they need testing. it's how and what app you use is the issue. but then, it's the same with pdf's - you must decide how and in what you want to display them with. goodreader is good, but adobe reader does it for me. i just list them up in there.

So if I don't have wifi to read emails to download the files how do I get them onto the iPad? Through iTunes? I obviously cant just drag and drop them in windows explorer.

My next issue is apps and multiple iPads. We want each iPad to be identical, can you sync them to be the same? Do you have to buy the app multiple times?

if you dont have wifi then yes, the only way is to sync via itunes (there are faffy alternatives of course, but as mentioned, these are a faff). but who doesnt have wifi? and what event will you go to that doesnt have wifi? and whatever, you always pre-prepair whatever.

i'm taking it you're a non apple device user? with ios you dont copy using usb or using a general Explorer style file system. flash drives arent a general option. this is completely not how things work. you need to get used to not doing it this way.

you can multiple devices registered to a single ID. then, you only need pay once for the software, which at most, is literally 2-3 bucks anyway.

I have an iPhone 4 :p So I know how they work but I never use it for syncing files such as these. So how do I get a powerpoint onto the iPad? Is there a document syncing category in iTunes like there is for music, pictures and video?

The issue is we don't have wifi in our office so adding files etc will be a pain. Believe me I have expressed the need for wifi!

If you use GoodReader for the ipads and they all share the same apple store/itunes account, you have the option of keeping the data in sync with iCloud so that each ipad will have access to those files.

Goodreader is like $10, but if you're using the same account for all ipads you only need to bye it once.

I'm using quick office. When there's an email with pdf attachment I can select to open it in quick office. From there I can simply move it to the ipad hard drive without syncing.

I forgot to print my boardingpass for the airplane, so at the place where I did have wifi I downloaded the pdf to the ipad, did what I just said and at the airport I loaded it from the local storage.
