Interiors and Self Illumination
show user profile  mike_renouf
I've been updating some of my earlier interior renders now that I've got a better grasp of photon mapping in mentalray and I've come up with a question.

Do you guys generally use self illuminating materials for any light sources to illuminate scenes when final gather is on? I have found that in large office scenes where there might be 20 or 30 ceiling luminaires, the render times are nasty when using GI and final gather with raytraced mentalray lights.

So a compromise I'm presently working with is to use self illuminating materials in the light fittings to give a false impression of a switched on light. I noticed that there is a "Illuminates the Scene (when using FG)" checkbox in the self illumination roll-out. I've not noticed this doing very much, but perhaps if used correctly it is a benefit.

Any suggestions would be really welcome!
Cheers,
Mike

the scene illumination on self illuminated materials does work but it requires very high fg quality to get it to actually work as a viable light source

i generally dont use self illuminated materials tho, except in rare cases where its more resource effective like neon signs and such

Thanks Stabby. I'll probably stay away from the self illumination bit, and stick with area lights for a bit to see whether I can accept my render times. At least I've finally got the photon mapping skills I was lacking.
