Interchangeable clothing methodology for game characters.

I really hope someone can shed some light on this. This is my LAST obstacle.

A humanoid for game character will be comprised of 4 skinned pieces.

- Hair
- Head
- Upperbody
- Lowerbody

Now let's say I want to model armor and the user wants to equip one piece at a time.

User puts on a vest and that is the only thing worn on the upperbody.
- Upperbody_Vest.x

User puts on a bracer and that is the only thing worn on the upperbody.
- Upperbody_bracer.x

user puts on a bracer and a vest and these two items are the only items on the upperbody
- torso_bracer_vest.x

user puts on a bracer and a vest and some gloves and these three items are on the upperbody.
- torso_bracer_vest_gloves.x

user puts on gloves and bracer and these two items are the only items on the upperbody.
- torso_gloves_bracer.x

What is the easiest way to model all these different combination's of armor pieces while maintaining a rigged character? There must be some kind of methodology I can follow. Someone please help! Notice how many different combination's of armor can make up the upperbody.

Is there an article or something somewhere I can read about this topic?
