insufficient memory
show user profile  is
Hello everyone,

I have a problem rendering my work out.

ERROR MESSAGE:

"The render was cancelled due to insufficient memory. Adjust the scene or render settings to reduce memory usage and try again."

I have a file with some trees and grass, so not really very complicated. I use a nVidia GTX 580 3GB as graphic card and have 6GB RAM on a windows 7pro 64 bits. I never had this problem before. Is there a setting I can change?

Thanks for all your help.

if ur using MR there are some checkboxes to lower the memory footprint by a little under render settings, other then that you can get rid of most of max's own memory use by rendering it via backburner but all that will save you 500mb at most.. if it still fails 4 gig ram sticks only cost like 30 bucks a piece :p

Thanks MR_Stabby,

Yes I use MR. So by buying more RAM I would actually HAVE more to use? I read somewhere that windows can only give max 1or 2GB.

64 bit max on 64 bit windows can use whatever you've got.

So 6GB is not enough? How I am sure the system is using all the GB it has? How can I check this?

backburner can split the render up into strips, that should help, in v-ray you can easily matte out certain elements so you can render high poly stuff/detailled displacement maps/highly relective materials etc seperatley. Not sure if Mray has the same function.

I may well be wrong here but I thought if using both a 64 bit OS and app Max should no longer get these sort of 'out of memory' errors. Instead Windows should keep freeing up virtual memory until you run out of HDD space.

depends how you've got your swap file configured.

I only have 8 gigs, and with Cinema4D/xp64 what i`ve been doing is setting my virtual memory to run off the external drive, and setting it high enough to cover the render in total - sometimes around 24 gig virtual memory.. Had to mess with it a bit to get it right.

Thanks Scotland Dave and all the others for your feedback. I am not really good in messing with my PC. How can I set this virtual memory values?

OK, I adjusted the SWAP file. It runs now.
Thank you.
