No, although that too sort of does what he's describing as well, except normalise (to my knowledge) is done during the actual unwrapping procedure. Relax can be done afterwards, but will likely change your islands shape.

There is a magical button though, that will re-scale the islands, as they are, no unwrapping algorithm, no relaxing, just scale. So it can be used whenever, and will just leave you with exactly what you had before, but all 1:1

Ah, 'rescale', I use Polyunwrapper, the rescaling is referred to as normalizing, it's nice because you have the option to use average, min, or max when scaling.

Ah right, pretty sweet. I used to use some script/plugin for unwrapping too but I'm actually pretty impressed with vanilla unwrapping in Max now.

Once you decipher the hieroglyphic nature of the icons (which seem to change or be shuffled around between versions), the vanilla unwrapping tools in Max are actually not half bad.

But I still use Flat-Iron and auto unwrap everything as a first step, gets like 90% of the work done (at least for hard surface/mechanical type stuff)

Oh, and unwrapping in zBrush for more organic subjects.

Yeah, while I could quite happily unwrap a character/organic shit in Max, I would be stupid to not hop over to 3d coat instead.

I just had a look around the unwrap UI for the first in a few years, it seems to have improved, I've just become so used to Polyunwrapper, for basic hardsurface stuff I apply planar map & flatten by face angles, for anything complex I find a tutorial.

2017 doesn't look too bad for organics, but as AD like to take other peoples ideas and implement them badly, I'd be inclined to go for zBrush or 3DCoat.
