Import Name Conflicts/Beginner Question
show user profile  Layoric

When I import models into the current scene, I often get name conflicts for simple shapes like Box01, Cylinder57, etc. Is there an easier way to avoid this other than individually naming every component as I build it?

You can tell it to rename them all as they come in.

However, it's good practice to name objects when you're in a complicated scene. Even if it's as simple as when you're finished building, run the rename tool and append a prefix onto the name of every object like:

That way when you have a heavy scene, you can type that into the selection tool and only that objects parts will be selected.

I used to skip the naming part too and just choose rename all when you import something new, but now that I'm used to naming everything it makes everything a lot easyer imo, so I suggest you get used to it.
At my internship at a 3d studio they were very anal about renaming everything in a logical way and I assume most companys are, so if you ever wish to work in the industry I think you MUST get used to organizing your scene like renaming etc.
