IK issues

I have set up a quadruped style bone layout and set IK solvers for the 4 legs.

The back 2 legs seem fine, but the front 2, when I move the IK goal helper upwards, the 3 leg bones seem to "twist" and push out to the side (where as the back leg bones stay in a straight line when the IK goal help is moved upwards)

Any idea why this happens to the front legs and how I can stop it?

EDIT - semi-fixed for now, just disabled a specific rotation axis for the front leg bones.

You need to set an upnode for the IK (i.e. a knee or elbow shape that it looks at).

Make a circle handle (or whatever) and align it to the knee joint (but directly infront), now select the ik goal and, in the rollout, click "Upnode" (or something like that) and select the circle handle.

Lastly, you'll want to select and link the circle handle to the foot handle or waist handle.
