I suck at web design,
show user profile  Poopsmith
First off, Hello. I've been browsing a bit lately (Loved the sig-wars), but haven't posted in a while. So, Hi!

Second, I can implement stuff fine, but man I am not creative. This is essentially the information that needs to be shown. This is about a days work for me. I think it is a decent start, but it doesn't look professional enough to me. I'm not asking anyone to make a website for me, just want any pointers on how to make it look better.

FULL SIZE

our existing site is :http://www.aggievilleapp.com
There is more information in this new site, but the same idea.

Thanks in advance,

Poopsmith

Just wrote you a reply then closed it be accident, doh!!

Now I will have to summarize:

1) Read some articles on the 'principles of web design'
2) Look at other sites, learn from them, do it.
3) Grid is your friend, use it to structure your site. ie Logo breaks the grid.
4) Users read left from to right and then down, so most important element (logo) should be at top left, which is pretty standard.
5) Tighten up white space.
6) Some images of the bars/bar logos would add interest.

Thanks for the Tips, I've done a few small things here. I'm not sure I like the ads on the left, but they fit nicely under the dip of the logo.

Still not feeling my list of bars. Anywho, here is the update:

#edit- the bar logos are too small, UGH. Imagine them slightly larger...

Why are you trying to make the website look like a generic touch-screen set up!? You should have two versions, one for mobile usage (similar to what you're doing now), and one for regular computer web-viewing. Take advantage of the fact that it's on a bigger screen, remember your target audience probably isn't going to be children or crazy old people either... there's really no need for that "overly-user-friendly" list of things to click.

Also, you end up with things like this:

Which is just not cool bro!

Yeah, I'm not sure how to format it to be more web-friendly. I'm essentially basing it off our iphone/android app which kind of has that format.

P.S. To everyone who helped me design my sister's wedding dress website, it looks so good she had people not coming to her store because they were afraid it was too expensive!

How would you know if they never came to the store to say so?

"You should have two versions, one for mobile usage"

It's probably a good idea for information intensive sites (news sites), but for sites like this it's not really necessary. Even complex sites like apple offer a uniform browsing experience. Mobile interfaces water down rich content (imho).

To elaborate on nemac's #3: Break the grid. Example:

plain/boring vs. dynamic/interesting

Human brains like contrast. This is where even the most analytical mind can be creative, it's like playing with blocks.

7) Pick up a couple comic books, pay attention to the composition. Each frame will flow to the next frame using image composition. Example:

The eye starts in the top left. The force of the the kicking, and the guys back arching guide the eye to the next panel. The knife points to the next panel. The force of the punch leads to the next. The shadow under the chin gives a bowl/ramp effect to the next panel (not the best). The leg leads the eye into the torso, which bends into the arms leading the eye to the main event of the guy with the gatling gun (which the artist totally ripped off from TF2's heavy).

^gif^

Takes a lot of practice to get good at it.

Oh, you're saying TO break the grid, not that I did break the grid. So I should strive for something like the right image, using flow like the TF2 ripoff lol.

How much does it cost to get something like this designed professionally? W/ No implementation.

I'm drinking a bottle of Chateauneuf. That's hardly immature! :)

(although it's not as nice as it used to be, I think these £10 bottles the supermarkets are selling are of lesser quality than the stuff you get frogside)

Stephen, I'll talk to my partners. How come I can't find any of the sites in your portfolio though? Also, what exactly does that include?
