i so love smoking
show user profile  Mr_Stabby
so this is my first attempt at smoking cessation ever, even tho i'm 22 ive been a smoker for 10 years because i sure knew how to pick awesome friends :p

its been 2 days and im beginning to think its a really bad idea :/ the physical craving is nonexistant but i just miss my 5 minute time-outs every few hours. i tried just flipping a coin or throwing fruits at passing motor vehicles to fill these 5 minutes but it just isn't the same.

the only reason im quitting is because after seeing a doctor for a physical for sailing lisence i got recalled for an ekg. the doc told me that i got a left ventricular pressure thing and even tho i have the bp/hr of an astronaut, if i dont stop smoking i will facking die.

since then ive tried inhaling other things like various aerosols, flowers, fluids but they lack that special kind of kick in the chest i so enjoy. Actually what did work was breathing the vapor off sauna rocks but it really hurt my face. Ive done some further research and it appears that the arterial constraining agent in smoking is nicotine itself so i think i can still smoke other substances like pot or plastic and im gonna try that first thing tomorrow

anyway i just figured i'd post here too since i cant stop blabbering lately and everybody whose phone number i got is ignoring me at this point, cheers!

Hey Stabby.
I quit 2 and a half years ago. I chewed nicorette gum whenever I had the urge. It worked for me.
I know everyone different but that worked. I found I would just start thinking about cigarettes and unable to think about anything else. So I'd chew a piece of the gum and it would go away.
I don't think I would have had a chance without it.

so just cut it right down. nicotine addiction is really hard (because it's so subtle) to dominate but you can.

I still have the occassional one because when you really feel like a ciggie, that & a nice cup of coffee is one of the pleasures of life, but the addiction/habit monster will come back if you're not careful.

aside from the health issue you've identified is the obvious cancer risk so weight the cost/benefit thing. it's just not worth it to smoke reguarly.

shame such nice things have to be bad for you but such is life.

ps. you will facking die whatever you do, but no need to check out early unless you have a death wish.

kind of makes you wonder tho - why hasnt tobacco as such really evolved much since it was first discovered? i mean obviously the plant has been made much superior to its natural origins but i bet if they spent half the money they spend on anti-smoking campaigns(which have been on tv here EVERY commercial break since before i was born) on engineering less harmful plants they would have something by now

breaking the habit's the hard part. when you have a ciggie, you're basically stepping away from work & chilling for 5 mins.

so just go chill for 5 mins. don't have to actually *do* anything, just chill. watch the world go by.

The smoke from any burning vegetation produces carcinogens.

So the idea would be to filter out the carcinogens and let the tasty stuff pass through.

Oh the joys of smoking. Been an addict since I was about 17 or 18 and till this day I can't see myself ever quitting unless you count dying as stopping smoking, but it doesn't help me when i'm dead eh.

@ Mr_Stabby:
"it appears that the arterial constraining agent in smoking is nicotine itself so i think i can still smoke other substances like pot or plastic and im gonna try that first thing tomorrow"
Pot (you're talking about weed, not ceramics right? ;-P) actually widens your arteries so technically it should actually help.

"kind of makes you wonder tho - why hasnt tobacco as such really evolved much since it was first discovered? i mean obviously the plant has been made much superior to its natural origins but i bet if they spent half the money they spend on anti-smoking campaigns(which have been on tv here EVERY commercial break since before i was born) on engineering less harmful plants they would have something by now"
It did evolve. They made it even more addictive and harmful. FYI over the years they added hundreds of chemicals to make it more addictive and appealing (even things like cacao to make it nice n sweet.) and it doesn't seem like they're interested in making it less harmful for some reason. Not sure why, I would think it would be a good thing to keep the addicts alive longer so they can make even more money.
And the fact that tobacco farmers are subsidized probably doesn't help fighting it either. Too much money at stake for a lot of parties.
Just look at the taxes it brings in, while even though they claimed that the taxes on tobacco would be used to counter the problems it would cause for society, while in fact recent research (at least in my country, but i'm sure it's the same everywhere else) showed those taxes just basically go up in smoke and there's no proof whatsoever of it being spent on anything related to smoking. Just some more pocket money to keep the wars going etc. it seems.

@ AS:
"o just go for a 100% joint.

unfortunately do too much of that & you ... what were we talking about again ?

Lol nice propaganda, too bad for you it has never been proven with unbiased research.
All decent research actually shows that there's not really much truth to this tale.

Of course inhaling any type of smoke coming off of burnt matter is not particularly healthy, but cannabis smoke seems to be way less harmful then tobacco smoke.
Besides that cannabis does have benefits unlike tobacco.

everything in moderation & you get the benefits whilst minimising the risk.

Lol are you fucking kidding me?
Please show me some research to back up that silly claim and i'll be happy to reconsider.
FYI I have probably read pretty much every single piece of research out there related to cannabis. I'm quite aware of what it's proven to do or not.

Nothing to do with me or what I do and how I do it.
If you feel like my work sucks I don't really care about you expressing it, but claiming it has something to do with my cannabis use while you clearly couldn't judge that as you don't really know me is quite sad really.

FYI I'm generally a slow worker when it comes to things like this when i'm doing it in my own time, and it has never been any different. Nothing to do with the substances I use.

edit: Lol you and your editing again AS.

AS, don't post nasty stuff, then delete it. You keep doing this. It's not fair to other users when you 180 your posts every two minutes.

Also, pot and kettle....

I kind of enjoyed quitting. Treat it like a game, and it can be quiet amusing and insightful. A battle of two minds, only the're both yours. You will probably try to find ways to allow yourself to continue smoking. "I'm still young i'll quit when i'm older", or "I really enjoy smoking and it's a positive social tool, my life wont be as good if I quit". This is just the addiction talking though, learn to spot and dismiss this stuff as soon as it pops in to your head. Also, when you get cravings try to analyse and pinpoint those physical feelings. Once you have a good understanding of exactly how these cravings make you feel, mentally and physically they become much easier to ignore.

Another thing that kind of helped for me was to get some herbal tobacco, smoking this stuff makes you quickly understand how you enjoy the nicotine and not the smoking.

Good luck, but if you fail it's not so bad, you're still young and can quit when you're older. ;)

edited as I found a nicer way of saying the same thing. sorry, no offence intended nicky.

I didn't 180 - I said the same thing in a more appropriate way.

thousands of lines of highly optimized c++ takes a while to put together. update soon.
