Fail.

Our entry was not selected in the Barclays competition. Never mind, I didn't put much work into the application.

This far superior technology was selected : https://www.takeonesmallstep.co.uk/Entry/View/1202

Enjoy your 3D shopping in their virtual world thingy.

Here's their website : http://www.nearglobal.com

They're using Qube Software's Q engine, which is pretty good. (I worked on it briefly a few years ago).

What a bunch of effing arse.

1) To see the products, it brings up a regular web page.
2) I do not want virtual wandering around to find the shop I need.
3) This idea failed in second Life already.

Fail.

What absolute guff!!! Yes please, sign me up to something which opens up twice as many windows that are poorly sized and which takes twice as long, yippee. Waste of time.

Sorry to hear you wernt successful!

Thanks, mate.

Actually, I am being very successful and am making significant progress addressing our outstanding technical issues.

@Nik - yeah - Near Global looks like Second Life, but not as good.

Onwards.

i'm sorry, but somebody was given 50k for that? (and in pounds too, so 72k in USD)

why do i get the feeling spambots or something were involved in this? Infinity is still kinda weak unfortunately, (thanks to lack of public support, not lack of capability...) but it should be able to beat that a million times over...

No, they haven't won the competition yet. There's a £50k prize per region & a number of entries were shortlisted per region. Infinity was not shortlisted because we has no cool video yet.

All they've done is taken Qube's graphics engine & created a simple shopping mall environment with an overlaid webpage hyperlink thingy somewhere (probably using Internet Exploder).

They haven't won yet, but their vastly superior "product" was selected over ours with zero technical evaluation.

Infinity is still kinda weak (graphically) because my focus has been to ensure the technology is robust enough for whatever you guys want to throw at it. Our tech. is available for inspection by anyone who wants to try it. These guys just have a video. Do they have a beta that can be evaluated ? What about tools ? Can you create shopping malls too or just them ? Infinity is superior to the Q engine for this kind of application because the Q engine does not have support for integrated dynamic interactive web pages within the 3D environment - they have to lay them over the top, breaking the flow. Oh well, yet one more "cool toy" to throw into the 3D web wannabe graveyard.

On the plus side, it's nice to see this kind of technology being considered a good business idea by mainstream corporate finance types. It is, if you can deliver on the concept.

Cool - I worked with Qube (1.something) a few years ago for a MMO (some of you may remember it) - called "Seed". I too found it a pretty flexible and solid little engine. I'm assuming this project is running on at least version 2.whatever, which should have a whole lot more cool features.

*edit* I was actually also involved in a similar virtual shopping thingy like this, about 5-6 years ago. We built ours on the TurnTool engine, but it never got very far, due to lack of interrest from investors.

Cheers

There have been numerous similar apps. I don't see anything new in this one. Why will it succeed where others have failed ?

Superscape called from 1996. They want their idea back. (2:20 into the clip)

"The Internet is rapidly moving from static two-dimensional web pages to becoming a three dimensional space" - 1996

Yet here we are almost 15 years later, and we are still at the stage of stupid 3D shopping centres.

Steve, can you run Flash within the Infinity space? Could I place a Flash file on a 3D surface?

Of course you can, mate.

You can interact with it & everything. Whack a YouTube video on the side of a teapot if you want.

Can the Q engine do this ? (don't think so)

To expand on your question - can flash 3D content sit in 3D in Infinity 3D environments ? No, not yet, but you can interactively map pages with flash content onto geometry in Infinity environments. 3D plugins don't exist yet (for browsers), though the infrastructure is largely in place to support them. This could be used to implement (for example) custom avatars, custom physics, custom e-commerce interfaces, etc.

I might allow some of your content into our promotional video if it's good enough, chaps :)

Won't even charge you for the promotional opportunity.

Same deal as discussed previously - a mash up of a bunch of Infinity format sites with a sound track & voice over.

To have a placement within the video, you'll need a live, impressive looking Infinity format 3D website.

Game on - my comments have been posted to the Near Global thread, though I have no idea if my appeal that our application wasn't properly considered will result in our entry being allowed to complete fairly against Near Global's proposal.

We were also "beaten" by a bloke with a scanner : https://www.takeonesmallstep.co.uk/Entry/View/3355

... and this, which is not a viable business.

https://www.takeonesmallstep.co.uk/Entry/View/1051

It'll be entirely grant dependant & will die once the fundings gone because very few people will pay for something like that.

both those are targetted at my age, both would fail. one straight out tells girls their life sucks and they need some group's "Support" that won't go down well. the other is a fancier (and more expensive) version of what we already have. books on cd. i put mine in the microwave.

on another note, i just tried to use infinity again, and it won't launch. the application directly, it's desktop shortcut, and start menu shortcut all do nothing on my pc, no new processes in task manager either.

ideas? here's my dxdiag if you'd like it.

mediafire'd so i don't spam maxforums. http://www.mediafire.com/?fmjxjm2zjnm

If that's an older build of Infinity, it's probably timed out.

Please grab the latest version from : http://advance-software.com/products

Install that & try again.

A new build will be uploaded shortly which upgrades Infinity Shader so it syncs with max standard materials more effectively.

If that's not the problem, I'll need to see your infinity.log file.

This file can be found in [Users]\[User]\AppData\Roaming\Infinity\infinity.log

(or Documents & Settings\Infinity ) on 2k/xp.

I know I'm going to regret asking this, but why did you put your CD in the microwave ?
