Hunting a jing. (clean mesh/wires from splines/Max text)
show user profile  Dave
Hey hey!

I usually save jings that prove awesome, but I've checked my folder and this one appears to be missing. It was probably Garp, or Toldaddy, or Grotey... but I remember it being along the lines of using Max text/spline, converting to a mesh... but having a nice clean mesh for the faces, all quad'ed n'shiz.

Anyone remember this? Or remember how it was done?

Cheers though man! I guess it wasn't a Garpodian invention, or a Grotelicious treat.

odd you can't see it.

goes like this though. Create text or whatever - extrude. create a separate box. proboolean them together so your text object becomes a proboolean object. Check the advanced options right at the bottom of the modify panel for the quadrify options.

Ah of course, the pro boolean. Something to do with its quad-tesselation thingie majiggy! Cheers Ross! And so quick off the mark too, I am amazed.

Why don't use quadify mesh, instead? Quicker and more elegant.

Did not know about that Joey. Nice one!

The results are largely the same, I admit. And Quadify is quicker, I agree. But it is certainly not as elegant. A quick test on simple blocky text yields results in favour of the long-way-round:

Knowing both certainly doesn't hurt though.

I sound like a bit of a dick there, didn't mean it to come across like that!

Interesting stuff. You would have thought they'd use the same algorithm.
