how to optimizing CAD data?
show user profile  ulisei
hi folks-

have to optimize some CAD data, but the model from which i have to start from is a really mess as you can see. everything is double sided like the shell-modifier but there are no groups, no edgeflow, no separate ID´s... pure hate :(
the original model has 4,5 million polys - result should be low as possible, i think i landing around 250.000 -- after deleting unneeded parts like screws and hidden parts there are still around 60 pieces to work on.
sacrifice my weekend for this, but fun is something completely different.
so i have to go through by hand, because the optimize modifier needs clear edges for its algorithm. i think its a matter of exporting from the CAD program.
i´ve heard about the possibility of retopology, wich would be handy for this, but i have no idea about it.
so what can i do?

many thanks for all suggestions in advance
& greetings, U.

cleaning up cad is a bitch. If you don't mind the high poly count, you can usually just render the imported cad files with no work on the mesh (if you don't try to mess with the normals or anything).

But trying to optimize the cad, aside from deleting actual objects that you don't need (or don't see), there isn't really a good way to do it. Easiest to just use the CAD as a template to re-model the mesh. Unless you have access to software that is designed to convert CAD to clean meshes, which I don't think are publicly available.

If you have access to the program that created the files, you can try exporting with different settings, but you may not find the results any better. -
