how to auto-focus an object?
show user profile  chretzli

What I am currently failing to achieve is an auto focus within 3dsMax.. that is to control the camera focus by the distance to a target object. Which sounds simple enough..

So in my scene I am trying to have an animated camera focus on an animated object without having to adjust the focus length manually. The object moves closer and further from the camera and it is never close to the camera's target.

The most obvious approach to me was this:
- created a tape helper, linked one side to the camera and the second to the object to be focused on, in the wire parameter I took the taper's distance value and linked it to the DOF distance - This doesn't work, unfortunally the focus length remains at its static standard value instead of being controlled by the wired distance.

For rendering Depth of Field, I am using Vray2.5.
I can't believe there is no workable solution. Or does anybody know one?

link the camera target to the object?

Like stabby says, align select and link the target.

Miauus Live Measure has a nifty tool that displays object distance to camera in the viewport, useful for dof and z-depth.

Thanks guys, however the target needs to be moving independently.
Now, this script solved the problem:
