How long to model this ?
show user profile  FX
Just out of interest, how long would it take you to model something like this ?

2 - 4 days.

[edit] 8 hour days that is.

[edit] Actually, it would be much, much longer if you had to get near-as-dammit 100% accuracy. But if it just must closely represent the shape then, yeah, 2 - 4 days.

Same. Depends on the amount of detail and on the reference supplied :)

Thanks for being honest guys...jeez I seriously undercut myself quoting for this....oh well, live and learn.. :/

I always think I model too slow and should get things done quicker.

There's about 14 hours work there, detail is enough to look good when rendered as a line illustration with AO.

I have another 10 machines to make :(

Tell your client there was a death in the family, but you have him covered, you'll give the job to your mentor, Hernandez, who works for ILM; he charges a bit more but he's the best at what he does and, because you're a friend, he will do the job at a discount rate (of double whatever you charged for).

haha. my plan was to flog them on turbosquid when finished, as the client just needs 2d illustrations, then I looked at turbosquid and saw a gazzilllion similar models. :/

Still, I'm trying to convince her to use these on Sketchfab with annotations, they are for training purposes to teach people how and where to install laser equipment that improves productivity.

That will be my opportunity to at least double the fee if not triple it.

> laser equipment that improves productivity.

All I can imagine rigt now is little lasers coming out of hidden panels in walls to zap slacking people in the ass, all sneaky like.

What a time to be alive.

"We're not meeting productivity targets this quarter."

"Okay, we'll install frickin' lasers everywhere."

Also, ~18 to 32 hours to model what you've posted. But depends on references supplied, etc. Also not sure if something went wrong with your wire-frame/edge-faces screenshot but holy mother of nGon!

Low poly, LD. Ngon's are good.

as long as its not for realtime or animation Ngon's are no problem :)

Turns out it's "intelligent machine control"...wire up digger, input co-ordinates, press go :)

nGons be damned, all that matters here is the outlying shape of the models, the low fee prevents me faffing with them.

I'd like to be able to model these to 100% detail, scale and accuracy, what I'm having to do is model to "just enough" detail for it to be recognizable for what it is.

No UV mapping no texturing just line render and ao....

That's all she wants, sent her a wire-frame preview of the first model and she liked the style :/...dull line illustrations. :(

THIS is what I'd like to do with them....:)

Yeah, I guess I'm just used to modelling stuff for real-time. I see nGons and my stomach starts cramping. I also find it oddly therapeutic, having a bastard of an nGon and simplifying it into triangles and quads. All about dat edge flow. I used to deal with a lot models that were completely "broken" through various import/export operations and getting everything nice and <=4 verts/poly is oddly satisfying to me.

Who do I call for help?

Yeah I'm with you there, mesh does look awful, I'd like it to be perfect but the budget simply doesn't justify the time it would take.

My bad entirely, I budgeted for around 4-5 hours per model, now waking up to the reality. :/...and these are the simple models.....:(
