How is scene states still broken?!
show user profile  jpedleham
It seems that the scene states dialog box problem (where it doesnt appear) is somehow still not working in 2017. What the hell are autodesk playing at? Fresh install, doesnt work. Install a service pack. Still doesnt work. reset prefe. no dice. reset workspace. nada. Its ridiculous this software costs so much.

Yup. Ridiculous.

You mean you aren't happy with no bug fixes, ignored user requests, new icons and a couple of new and possibly useless to you features every year for your $thousands every year?

Houdini indi is $200 a year.
C4D perpetual license is £540
Blender is free.

I know it's not the same as Max, but it makes you wonder what the heck you are really paying for (hint director's fees, marketing and new icons).

Its great when it works. But as soon as you try and do something semi efficiently theres always something that stops you in your tracks. Its crazy. I wish they would stop for a moment and not follow the crazy one year release cycle and just spend a few years rewriting max from the ground up making sure it all works instead of scrapping mental ray and forcing everyone into arnold and paid node licenses... ridiculous.

On a side note autodesk featured one of my renders on their instagram today :)

Some long shot suggestions stuff I found on the internet that may help (or not)....

3dconnexion mouse?
Dual screen?

Uninstall any 3dconnexion installed software / drivers.

Some users reported way back it helped if they login as a Windows user with admin privileges.

The following command should launch the [Manage Scene States] popup window manually:

command:actionMan.executeAction -1682387772 "4112"

You can open up your 3dsmax.ini and check the location and size of the [Manage Scene States] popup window. Some values that appear to work depending on screen resolution:

SceneStateManageDialog=896 192 1141 420 1
SceneStateManageDialog=124 196 388 430 1

If using some weird dual screen config and the popup appears outside of the viewable area:

Attemt to open the scene states manager from the Tools menu. Then, without doing anything else:

1) Press Alt-Spacebar
2) Press Down Arrow 1 time (only)
3) Press Enter
4) Press Down Arrow 1 time
5) Move your mouse around. (+ try shaking your mouse and see if all other windows minimize)

(On Windows 8/10, if you click and hold using the left mouse button on the title bar of a window and 'shake' the mouse rapidly all other windows minimize - this is a Windows 8/10 feature)

Launch "notepad" or similar and give it a try to see first hand what the above steps actually do.

I created the new user, logged it, launched max, the scene state dialog appears correctly.
The INI file is changed to have this section added:

MXSDebugFloater=270 223 582 429 1
SceneStateManageDialog=0 0 264 234 1

I logged the user out, logged back into mine, launched max, and the scene state dialog now appears properly.

The path to the INI is here: C:\Users\[your userid]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2017 - 64bit\ENU The easy way to open this directory is to type

1. [Win]+[R] to launch the Run dialog window.
2. Type the following text followed by [ENTER] and drill down into Autodesk > 3dsmax

Srsly? Such broken software.

What about:
6) Breathing through your left nostril only
7) Drinking a glass of water

3d connexion. That was the answer. Its very weird that a mouse would cause a certain dialog box not to appear.

Steps 1-5 have nothing to do with 3dsmax and are used to reposition an off-screen pop-up window using only the keyboard. If you can't see a window, you can't use the mouse to move it...

3d connexion. That was the answer.
you're welcome.
