hot coals material test (mr)

I started playing around earlier today with rayfire again, but I decided to explode a wall and render out a zdepth pass to use as a cracked concrete displacement map (worked good for this too) but i kept playing around till i ended up with this glowing coals effect

This is also my first image using a linear workflow

the ball is just there for.... well, no real reason at the moment =P
but i'm going to do something cool with this one, I just need to figure out what

EDIT: does anyone know a good way of getting heat shimmer in 3ds max or photoshop?
I can't seem to get a nice effect

Nice work mate !

I assume that you're talking about those heat distorsions... in which case I'd suggest few planes with animated noise as displacement and refractive material. Might work ...

Here is some more info for ya

I started by creating the displacement map by rendering out a zdepth of another scene (an exploding wall)
I then started a new scene, creating a plane with something like 75x75 intersections
and added a displace mod for the displacement and use the zdepth (this is a very rough displacement for getting an approximation of the surface, I also used mr displacement later on)

Lighting is done with a simple mr sun sky with mr exposure control and sky map. A glare map is also use for rendering

the texture map i used was a shot of concrete, which i then took into photoshop and added the zdepth map to it to add cracks and shadows also added glow around the edges of the shards.
I also took this glow and saved it as its own file for glow in max

The ground material is mr arch design, with low blurry reflection, and a high roughness value
the texture map is used in the defuse and the bump slots
the glow material is used in the glow slot with the value really high (my scene units must have been out)
For the displacement i used the zdepth again

the particles are a simple pflow emitting from the surface using selected verts selected using the glow map in a volume select

Everything was rendered out with dof and motion blur and comped together in photoshop

I've updated the OP with the newest version

I've gotten rid of the test ball and replaced it with a locket, it doesn't look perfect yet and I still have to add the chain.

I've tried to get heat shimmer effect but couldn't get it to look right, if i use planes and refection you see the edges, I tried fixing this by using IOR maps to control what parts of the planes were in fact refractive but, it wasn't working too well either, I'm just going to leave it as is I think

Most other changes have been done in post

I prefer the original, the new one looks wet, almost like sugar being caramelised.
