Hopefully simple shoe problem...

Hi, I am having some trouble with some objects in my scene and after 4 hours of trying to fix it i think i need help!
I have a few shoes on the wall in my scene i imported from a 3d autocad file. the shoes are not rendering solid. in the modifier it is an editable mesh.
the shoe are hollow, but when i had it in conceptual mode in autocad it appeared whole. I built this room in autocad, I dont really know how to use max. is there maybe a modifier with a setting I havent discovered that fixes this? or can it not be rendered because its not solid? sorry if the explanation is lacking. im using mental ray render. thanks!!

Well, looking at it, I think flipped normals can be ruled out.

Does the material work in the material editor? Even with the checkered background on?
Specialty: Non-organic modelling and effects.
Setup: 3D Studio 2010 with finalRender.
Rig: No, no I can't.

Check 2-Sided for the shoe material in the mat editor??
