sure

first I'll just say that it is a handy program, and I use it (have been using it for some years) when I need it. SO - I come from a Quixel age where the program is very prone to crash (buggy), and the last update was in November 2014 (and contacting support is hit or miss)

-- so hearing this from the only Quixel "employee" that posts over on their forums at polycount - "We could have gotten it to work with patches of course, but we just felt like doing it like this would yield better results, and it already has since The SUITE is remarkably faster now and very stable!" (referring to QS2) -- this is like an eye roll thing .. to me it SEEMS like there's this 1 guy who made the suite, and refers to himself as "us"

They(him) have also been promising us MegaScans for so long now I can't remember - this was the one reason I bought Quixel so long ago, but having NO MENTION about it in this update is like a smack in the face - again, if you've followed Quixel progress for any time on their forums, this is a HUGE topic of contention - They(he) have been saying that MegaScans are SO CLOSE!! SO CLOSE TO BEING READY!! for so long now that it's almost insulting to hear them talk about MegaScans. And with them not being included or even mentioned in this update is frustrating

-edit- and there's a lot of little things that suck.. like the support issue's we've had (not being able to contact anyone for like a week), software insta-crashing (we still don't know how we fixed it), lack of updates, etc

Quixel kinda feels like the "Gotcha a Dollar" geico fisherman... The program has so much potential, but they've kinda been fucking with us for almost a year now.

So yea, I'm excited for this release because the last one was pretty unremarkable, especially with Substance Designer and Substance Painter out there - we've actually stopped using quixel at work and picked up these other 2. Painter is pretty amaze-balls.

Wow, that does sound quite frustrating. Thanks for the explanation.

I wish this was a stand alone application. Could definitely go toe to toe with substance painter.

Hmm. Been doing stuff similar to this for a while now in 3dCoat 4.5, but this looks great.

I tried this so many times, and gave up due to so many crashes... with no apparent solution.

I'm not impressed...I will be if v2 actually works, I won't be surprised if it turns out to be more of the same.

It does look really cool. I remember i checked out either a demo or it might have been a free version of it ages ago.. I think the interface and workflow was so unobvious i just gave up.

Are the crashes related to the GPU perhaps or the software itself? There have been so many driver issues particularly with NVidia over the past three four years that i get the impression it's starting to make other software developers look bad ( ie guys who create software which relies on stable display drivers )..

I remember seeing the MegaScans thing, can't believe it's not been released yet it was indeed a huge selling point at the time..

It does chew ram (if you don't have much, like me). And it does make 100's of layers in PS which take a while to clean up afterwards in the old version I've got. And, no it's not a PS plugin, directly, but it opens PS while you're using it and is sort of a bridge.

The workflow is: Make a model and unwrap it. Chuck in the DDO materials into Max and assign a bunch (leather, steel, chrome etc.) Save out a colour map and UV map. Also save out a tangent space normal map, and world space normal map. Open DDO and use some presets if you like to add global environmental effects (that's why you need the world space normal map) and material presets. Then muck around from there.

I'm excited for the update and hopefully they release soon! I can understand some of the trepidation after the crashy 1.8 and the continued delay of Megascans, but I give Quixel the benefit of the doubt. I certainly don't think they misrepresent the size of the team (they've said it's small and I know at least two employees post on Polycount). I also don't feel like they're some slight of hand shady money grab company.

Anyway, 1.8 has worked OK for me, but I'm on CS6 and I think some of the issues are related to the CC version of Photoshop. I'd like to see it as a stand alone app as well.

Maybe I'm biased because I got the indy version of the suite for like $50 during a black Monday sale. I'm happy to be patient, but would probably feel differently if I paid for multiple seats and was designing a production pipeline around it though...
