Hip Hop is Dead [UE4] [56k Warning ;]
show user profile  jStins
Hey fellas,

So over the last year I've been learning UE4, mainly as it relates to asset creation, lighting, PBR shading, etc... Unlike my last UDK learning attempt, I decided to stay narrow in scope and focus on props. Here's the brief for the project:

A still image focusing on the clunky old hardware that was around during the rise of hip hop. The setting is a dusty old basement with late-day sunlight lighting the scene. Visual target is realism.

I'm getting close to calling this done, but have been looking at it too long and need some fresh eyes on it so I know what needs to be refined before I make portfolio shots and breakdowns.

So have at it MFers. What needs to be tweaked, adjusted, refined or added to call this piece done?

Like it a lot!

Im no photography expert by far, but about the dof in the 2nd shot: if the dof is so strong up close, shouldnt the further away stuff like the LP player be also blurry?

Love it :)
Like the sl1200!
I think the dof is a bit strange in combination with the bloom in the second shot. Also, whats with the background? It looks whiteout and flat.

i dont know why, but i think the scene needs some cigarettes, an ash tray, and some smoke to give it some more atmosphere

Hey thanks everyone!

@Spoon: You're probably right. I'll look into it and the DOF probably needs to be toned down overall.

@ijzerman: I dropped the saturation on the posters so the props would stand out more, but I probably overdid it. Also need to drop the spec on those I think.

@joelr: That was on my list of stuff to add. Getting a bit burnt out on the realistic props, but I'll see if I can muster a little more energy to add those elements. I agree it would help the mood and history of the space.

@digs, Nik, 9krausec: Cheers! Thanks!

@Dr. Jim: You're probably right about the historical context of the albums / posters in the scene, but whatever because WUTANG.

The only thing I would tweak is the atmosphere. Cigarette smoke / fog + coloured lighting would be brill.

As for your modelling and texturing... fucking sick, dude.

Very awesome works mate.

Although, wouldnt bother giving a 56k warning sny more. Even I'm not that out of date.

Very sexy work,

3 things look a little off to me though.

The very shiny circular poster holder thingies (if that's what they are?), they're only really evident on the biggie smalls poster, but the top left appears to be getting clipped out.

And then you've got one in a seemingly random location over on the left.

Aside from that, the duplicated crates are very obvious due to the pen markings you've used, my guess is you're repeating those UV's around the entire crate, which is why you haven't just turned one around to hide the cloned markings. Not really a major issue at all, but it's something I noticed.

Again though, very nice work! Was cool to see it in the marmo viewer too.

Looks really good, but really poly heavy for UE4.
how does it run?

Hello there

@Strat: Thanks! The 56k warning was just a shout out to the old days and to let people know there's images in here that break the resolution rules. :P

@Dave: Thanks for the kind words and good eye on some of those details. I may just let the thumb tack thing go, but if I'll see what's up with that if I get a lot of heat about it. You're spot on with the crates. I probably could have used stacked UVs on two sides instead of one.

@gogodr: Thanks. It runs smoothly (30-40fps) on my system and I don't have a great video card. 11k isn't that many polys for a hero asset. I agree that in the context of an actual game where these were background props, it would be overkill though.
