High poly to low poly? --> rigging
show user profile  alliaison87
Okay, I've got a high poly model, and the same model at a much lower poly count version. Both have the same rig. The high poly one's rig has animation on it. I need to transfer the animation on the higher poly one to the lower poly one. They are both in different files, of course.

How do I get the animation from one rig to the other?

Thanks.

File > Merge. Perhaps... if you're dealing with a biped I think it has its own magic milarky in getting bip files and whatever else.

Effort required to type has been entirely depleted.

I probably should have mentioned that it's a custom rig. Whoever made it used the Skin Modifier.

Thank you, though.

The only way I can think to do it would be to create a copy (or instance so you can animate one, and it will reflect on the other) of the rig on the high poly model (with all the dummies, points, and IK chains) and then re-skin the low poly model with the newly copied rig. You might even be able to save out the envelopes from the unanimated rig and load them up on the reskinned one (if you're lucky)

Hope this helps.

That's what I was afraid of.

Does anyone have any really good links to tutorials on using the Skin modifier? The ones I'm finding seem to omit some information.

Thanks, guys.

If the animation controls are all named the same, then use "Merge Animation" under the File menu.

That's extremely useful, thanks T-bone.

From the help file: "Important: The Merge Animation command is available only as a Customize User Interface action; to use it you must first add it explicitly to the user interface."

From Customize User Interface, Menus tab, just drag and drop the Merge Animation to the menu bar customization.

hehe, oops....i've had that command hotkeyed for awhile. It is very useful.

[edit]....fyi, if you select the "Master" or main control that everything is linked to and choose merge animation, there's a tick-box labeled, "Subtree". check that and it should merge all animation for the entire hierarchy.
