Help with iTunes please!
show user profile  Nik Clark
Hi guys.

I'm reinstalling Windows on my son/wife's PC.

They have iTunes on the PC, and have a butt load of ripped Albums on there. None of it is paid for via iTunes, she has just sat there for two days and ripped her album collection using iTunes.

She doesn't want to lose it all. It's many Gigs of albums, and a lot of time sat at the PC with CD's in hand.

What should I do to back it all up and put it back with her new Windows account? Is iTunes going to let me do this? Can she still use her iPod with the reinstall?

I watched my brother reinstall Windows, and iTunes told him that he couldn't install iTunes on another computer, and he couldn't use his iPod any more. Am I going to have this problem?

Please help, guys, I know nothing of iTunes, or any DRM.

Thanks for the replies.

So, what about reinstalling iTunes and having her acount on the reinstall. Won't iTunes whine on about being installed on two computers?

Somewhere , there's a directory of all her music?

I ask, because my brother couldn't use his iPod once Windows was reinstalled, and it wouldn't let him have access to the songs he had paid for.

Thanks.

you can put your account on 5 different computers. i have my iphone, son's ipod touch and mum's shuffle on 4 computers. if you activate the account on the new computer it should bring over the itune buys and also if you plug in the device make itunes do a back up of it first. i did this when i formatted my computer and never lost a thing. and yes as simon said there should be a folder in my documents for itunes. or you could download them from the device using the apps i posted ( maybe)

Thanks, DD! That clears up most of my concerns.

One thing though, iTunes will only allow 5 installs? Over the expected life of an iPod, that's not enough. What if I reinstall Windows reqularly, will the iPod stop working after the five reinstalls?

Thanks mate. Now downloading from your links.

well there is a deactivate computer/ account in itunes maybe you can only have 5 activated at the same time so maybe you can just deactivate it and then you have a spare one remaining. dunno. i just know it tells me i have 4 computers active
and if i seem to remember windows has around 5 installs before you have to call them up to get an activation code ( which i had to do and then moaned to him explaining windows needs more than 5 formats before you can even consider being settled )

I reinstalled on a new harddrive on my current PC and it automatically activated for me and told me I still had 4 more pc's I could install on. So its taking some info specific to the mobo into the activation.

All my CD's are ripped to mp3, and stored on a media harddrive. If I want them on my iTouch I drag them over and dont let iTunes manage them or store them. I've heard of so many people having issues moving music I only use iTunes to update the iTouch.

Now if they would stop being arseholes and not make me pay for the Ipod OSX 3.0 I'd be happy. I dont need cut copy n paste, I need my apps to work again,..

You can deactivate the ipod so you get some of the five back if say you dont use that computer anymore, so its just a limit of 5 computers at any one time. Problem i have is i didnt know about this before so two or three of my activations are in computers long ago put in a rubbish dump.

Jock, when you hit 5 activations you get the option to deactivate them all and start with a clean slate, it's in the link dd posted.
