Here's a good tutorial on how to make diamonds or other gems. You'll have to use Mental Ray for your renderer. This is getting into some pretty technical stuff, but since you're trying to render something as complex as a precious gem, I assume you're aware it'll take some work to make it look good.

Find photos of a real ruby. Learn the basics of mesh editing, and make one. Rubies can be cut in a million ways, so find a cut you like and copy it.
Find some source material. Your object looks fake. No real world object looks like that. Copy something that exists, or at least look at some real things and see how they are constructed.
Learn about studio photography setups and lighting for small items. Copy these techniques in Max.
Learn about materials. Apply this knowledge to your render.
These are the only ways you can improve this.
