need help! under water volume rays...
show user profile  Bolteon
okay... so here's the deal.

the cameras under water. in vray i've setup a refractive surface that shimmers the sun above the water.

that part looks great.

i need volume rays that would come from that shimmer to shine into the water...

so far i have tried:

-camera mapping the surface render onto a plane and letting volume light (in max) go through the opacity

-camera mapping the surface render onto a plane and letting volume light (in max) go through the plane clipped by a vray displacement mod

-camera mapping a volume select and tehn deleting the parts that need be gone and letting the volume light shine through this (closest to perfect i've gotten, but the first frame is the only one that is fine... the rest are offset by a bit, any ideas?)

-using a projection map in the light to cast the volume light of the surface render set to screen

-using a projection map in the light to cast the volume light of the surface set to a camera map per pixel

-using a projection map in the light to cast the volume light of the surface set to a camera map

-all the above with scatter vl instead of volume light

----

i'm going fucking mad. i see that MR can do volume caustics... what i need it to do is cast volume caustics and refract/reflect in the surface of the water at the same time.

i wouldn't ask if i wasn't in a rut, hoepfully some of you MR guru's can help.

p.s. no, it can't be done in post... it needs to be a 3d element as were moving about, through, and around the volume rays with the camera.

see the tut files, get understand them.
after that you can easily reproduce it and alter for your demands.

[edit] sorry, wouldn't sound that harsh, but there are a lot good tuts out around for this
.

anyway, U.
