Help: Teach me chamfering and how to make this shape. Please? =)
show user profile  Stianbl
Hi there great people of maxforums.

After some comments on my previous syringes where people say some of them reminded them of the zydrate syringe from Repo, I thought I'd give it a try.

Anyway, this question is fairly general, and if anyone could shed some light on my issues then I might learn something that will help me greatly with all the next models.

My problems now, are how to read a relatively basic mesh, and understand how to actually make it and then which edges to chamfer to get the result.

Here is a picture:

As you see in the picture, my first problem is actually going from a cylinder over to a flat square thing, but to still keep the bent top and bottom. I think you understand what I mean, by looking at where the first arrow points. Somehow, everythime I give this a try I mess it up. So I end up just using ProBoolean, whish truly messes it up, but at least I get a clean cut. (but not able to modify this mesh, and not able to smooth it... so cant use it).

Also, the second arrow. Chamfering. I know how to extract the mesh down, of corse, and make the skapes here, but when I want to smooth it, and add chamfering I again mess it all up.

-

So, if it's not too much to ask; could someone explain to me, or even better, do a basic model of the handle and try and show how to make the shape in the first arrow look ok, and then show me how to chamfer this mess?

This is something I've had a great deal of problems with earlier, and thats why I mostly stick to objects withs is easier for me to make, as thisone always turns out shit to me. =P

To show you my example, look at the picture below. As you see, it's not very good. The chamfering is shit, and I used proBoolean, which makes the cuts too sharp, and yeah...
(ignor the textures) It's just a test render. Also the plate on the handle will be removed and made again.

Thanks a lot for all the feedback I can get.

Post a shaded wireframe. Unsmoothed if you use smoothing modifiers. That'll get you much more help

(edit: less speech, more pics)

Proportions are way off but the topo should get you what you want.

I've already posted these but they're really good for the basics:

Ey =) Been on a party tonight, but I wanted to thanks you a lot for showing me =)

I do have to say it looks too simple. I mean, I'm sure I tried to do it like this a bounch of times =P
Guess not =)

So thanks a lot mate!

Garh, thats why I never get it right...
So, am I doing it wrong when I add the chamfer, since I get these bad corners? I had to go in and delete polygons and weld the vertexes after chamfering to get it right. It's not much work on this mesh, but I've never thought of it before.. Stupid me.

But yes, is there a way to chamfer to get it right stright away?

I use extrude a lot more than chamfer.

Thanks for the vid mate! Never thought of using extrude to chamfer the object =) Gotta play around with that and learn it better.

Just to quickly jump to another question: is there a way to wrap something around an object? If you see the handle in the ref pic, I'd like to wrap the fabric around the handle of the "gun".
I know I can make a path, and use patdeform, but I cant get the path good either... Garh.. =P

I suppose you could do it with Cloth but I'm not familiar with it.

The way I'd do it is select the polys covered by the tape and duplicate them, extrude them a little inward so they are below the surface (delete the surrounding ring of polys created by the extrusion), make some cuts to show where the tape ends and apply a cylindrical unwrap.
Then draw a displacement map in photoshop (tileable horizontally so there is no seam). Blurred lines for the folds and sharp transitions for where the tape overlaps.
If you're using vray (are you?), you can adjust the strength and the hight of the displacement with the Amount and Shift settings (in the VRayDisplacementMod).

I'm using VRay, yes. I'll give it a try and see if I understood it =)

Something I noticed in your ref.
I might be wrong but I believe the phial is not fixed to the gun the way you made it. I think it gets plugged or screwed inside the cylindrical thingy on top of the gun.

I thought about that myself, but after looking at the very few refs there are I think this is how it should be. That said, I dont even know if the ref I have is the real ref.. =S

Only reason I wanted to try this is because some people comment on my other syringes at Deviantart saying it looks like the zydrate gun from repo (syringe, not gun.... =p) I havn't seen repo, so I only have google to help me, and every ref is different =P hehe

Think I'll just leave it as it is for now. I'm not happy with the handle at all, but I did lear a lot about chamfering =) So thanks Garp!

I might pick it up again later this week to see if I can finish it. I'd rather want to give wall-e a second try, but just now I have to play some more Dragon Age! Oh yeah! =)

EDIT: and yeah, no crits on this =P
Reflection are bad, and most everything is bad right now. Think I might just scrap the whole thing.
I did manage to add some "leather", tough it looks more like rubber bands.. hehe

Thanks. I'll see if I want to fix up the body of the syringe later.. Just bugs me that I still dont have full controll over my chamfering, and I end up making a lot of mess. Though, Garps tips helped me a lot I still don't feel that I understand all there is to chamfering.

ANd I do use vray materials =)It's a great site.. I actually have applied a leather material to the "rubber-bands" now, but still look like rubber-bands =P

EDIT:
Another render. only change is the tip of the syringe. Dont know why I get the ugly reflections, but I'll look into that later. Had enough of this thing for now, but I'll probably bring it back up in a couple of days and see what I can do =)
