Help with selecting font for new Logo
show user profile  Edge
Hi all

We've been working on a new Logo concept for Frantic Games, getting everything in place so when we make our big push we have a very professional presence.

Step 1 was creating the correct infrastructure with:
http://1944d-day.com/

A Flash based Content management system that allows us to showcase Images, Movies and Interactive flash files on the site. The intention is very simple a very large imacting Gallery system showcasing the best of 1944. Right now there is only the Allied Star but soon (well one day!!!) we will have large ingame shots, movies and an interactive map of 1944.

So that was the first step and we are very happy with the results, the next phase was to redo our logo:

into something which could be more easily applied across medias:

Now with the new logo we have not decided on a font, we are trying to find something both fitting to the logo and which gives us the greatest possible scope.

Some things I had in mind:

http://www.dafont.com/ikhiooglawithout.font?nb_ppp=50&text=Frantic+Games

http://www.dafont.com/maksukehoitus.font?nb_ppp=50&text=Frantic+Games

http://www.dafont.com/-ank.font?nb_ppp=50&text=Frantic+Games

But again I am unsure, the new logo has been tied into some new Promo Posters for the game, where in each poster one unit in the poster has the Frantic Games eye. We also have a printer friendly version which is the same logo taken and adapted for letter head, print and business cards.

Right now though we are a bit stuck trying to find the correct Fonts to use for both Frantic & Games. Any help you have would be great.

Cheers
Ronan

I will get back to you when I get back home, I know of a couple of fonts that probably would work pretty awesome if you want to go in the general direction of the latter pic you posted.

However, nothing would probably beat a custom made font for the logo.

Custom font is the direction we are hoping to go, but we do want to make sure we get a good set of references to begin from. No point wasting time trying to make something up when we can look at potential fits and see why they work.

I have to be honest, when I look at the three fonts that you link and I do think they portray more of an amateurish feel than anything else. Using gritty fonts you really have to take into strong account on how it would look at the very small scales as well, such as on a letterhead or business card. What looks awesome in a large resolution can quickly turn into a amorphous blob in small resolutions.

If you want to go the more edgy route there are many fonts that you can choose from. I'd take a look over at the T26 font foundry. Sure their fonts are commercial, but you can use the preview box to knock up something in Photoshop to look nice before you choose which one is for you. Sadly, when it comes to professional looking stuff 99 times out of 100 going commercial is the only way to go.

Personally I think a plain but bold sans serif font would work really well for "Frantic", something along the lines of Neutraface Display Titling for instance: http://www.houseind.com/index.php?page=showfont&id=615&subpage=neutra_view_all_fonts

Even if that's not your bag it could be a decent starting point if you want to create something more custom.

I'm not so hot when it comes to fonts, but i'd like to say that I agree with MrP on the topic of the three linked fonts being quite... amateur.

I Agree mrP.

T26 Foundry looks very nice indeed.

Cheers for that, I didn't even know such a think was about.

I like the old one better, has a more classic feel to it.
