| Help...Modeling the stitching on a Cricket ball.... |
Dr. Jim |
OK guru's....
I am at a loss,....I have thought of weird ideas like modeling a straight stitch and trying to 'bend' it around the ball,.....nothing is quite working right.
Any easy, simple, I-am-an-idiot-for-not-knowing way of modeling the stitching?
NO BUMP OR DISPLACEMENT ALLOWED,...don't even go there. Must be modeled.
btw - It can be a repeating of the same stitch, that is fine. It does NOT have to contain the subtle imperfections shown in this photo. Just the 4 diagnal, offset stitchs that wraps the ball, and then there are the 2 straight stitchs on the inside closer to the color division
ALSO, the actual thread can be smooth, it does not have to be have 'texture' as the thread in the photo is.

Make one stitch
Clone its squliions of times i.e. just guesstimate how many would go around the ball, you can adjust it later)
attach them all together
add a path deform modifier. and use a circle spline at the same diameter as the part you want to place the stich. if there isnt an edge loop at the correct place, clone the ball, slice it where you want the stich then create a shape from the open edge.
if there arent enough stiches (or too many) go back below the path deform mod and clone/delete at element level.
sorted :)

Lol, Grotey is losing his touch with these tutorials. Not even a still image, it's just not good enough.

It's sad, he used to be such a lively, helpful spirit. He's just an empty shell now. Sad. I miss the old Grotey.

We should do a collection and send him some flowers or something to cheer him up. It' heartbreaking seeing him like this.

Lol ok guys here you are, images are a bit big to do animated, (came out at 3mb :s) so here are the stills.
1. create 1 stich and put in place
2. clone lots of times in a straight line, attach all together and reset xform.
3. go to side view and clone-rotate the line of stiches into the second place.
4. mirror the two lines to the other side using the balls pivot point, attach all the stiches together and remember to reset form this is so the path comes out square to the body even if its only at a 90° angle) and then create a shape from the central edge loop on the ball
5. add a path deform using the new spline as the path , and move the path into place.
you can go back under the pathdeform mod to adjust the amount of stiches to suit
6. I also adjusted the stretch value to 0.995 so the stiches met up perfectly on the ends.
this is obviouslt the same method for the in-line stiches too

Nice tutorial. Will that work for a red and yellow ball too like in the picture? Can we have a tutorial for that too to be certain?

Oh,....hmmm....you have a good point there LM. I am not sure,...the ball in his example is brownish colored,....I wondered if he even looked at the ref pic I posted?
Will it still work Grotey?
