help me with my mod for free
show user profile  mattymoose
I want to make a mod based on Somali pirates hijacking cargo ships. Anyone play x-com? Like that, except instead of intercepting UFO's you're looting stuff. And instead of turn based strategy it's FPS.
Who's with me?

Yea that's actually what I was thinking Amish. I'd rather use Source or Unreal, but Cryengine is great at rendering water & tropical islands, day/night cycles, and it already has driveable boats. Well, I guess Source has boats too, hmm.

I actually haven't planned anything, I just thought I'd throw the idea out there. As the google trends chart indicates, it might be a good topic to get on top of.

"I actually haven't planned anything"

Really? The way your post is written it really sounds like you've been planning this for months.

I've been kicking around iideas for a modern pirate game for months, I think since those guys hijacked a cargo ship full of Russian tanks. I can just imagine gameplay where you fight cabin-to-cabin on a giant ship, and then when the UN Navy comes after you (I know, not realistic) you get on deck in a fucking Russian tank and start shelling the incoming Navy boats with the tank cannon...

The best part is Somali pirates aren't actually bad guys. They generally don't kill or mistreat their hostages, they are mostly fishermen who've had their livelyhood taken away by commercial fishing or pollution or something. And they are widely admired by the populations of their countries, because their ransom money drives the economy of certain regions. A classic robin-hood story!

I think it's perfect to update the classic 1800s pirate mythology with a modern twist!

FPS? C'mon, challenge yourself a little here. A piratey looting style game in an FPS fashion smells like yawnsville to me... run on a ship, shoot up some dudes, run close to an object *Item received: Loot 1 of 16!*, and repeat.

Make it third person and i'll scratch my chinny chin chin as I mull it over in my noggin'

I'm open to all suggestions - and third person would work well for "boarding" sequences where you're climbing up the side of a cargo ship, Assasins Creed style. But I'm not particularly a fan of third-person shooters. Except Gears. Hm, I wonder if it's possible to get a gears-like cover system and climbing mechanic into cry-engine? I'll have to check it out. Still, a 3rd person shooter with pirates, climbing, and a cover system sounds uncomfortably similar to Uncharted.

Here's some more reference material for those interested:

edit just saw this a few minutes ago... Item recieved! Loot 1 of 16!

The first level of i think COD4 was boarding/storming a vessel and i thought it was shit. Just a bit boring really..

Maybe something like a harbour/dock scene where u have to basically fight your way stage by stage through to the boat itself and then try and command the thing offshore.. That would be nice.

Good luck!

Yeah, making boats interesting as a game level might be a challenge. On the other hand, you've got Cruise ships, cargo ships, oil tankers & oil rigs, fishing trawlers, some sheik's luxury yacht, military boats... I think it's possible to create a good variety of environments based on this theme.

And yeah, I don't think pirates really attack docked boats (they need to wait until all the cargo is on board, and boats usually set sail immediately after that happens), but maybe that could be a way of getting new pirate boats to sail around in. Or they could have battles defending their own harbour from the authorities.

need to make it GTA style with a bit of co-op ai bots that fire from the boat and such.

you should start storyboarding gameplay.

My mod will absolutely have co-op AI. Maybe even co-op multiplayer, or both. What do you mean by "storyboarding gameplay?" Like screenshot mockups and stuff?

... first thing I'm gonna do is a Game Design Document. Then Art Design Doc with some mockups.

Proper planning eh? I'll gander that GDD when you're done with it.

My main problem with FPS' is there's relatively small amounts of Art-Appreciation in them. Unless of course it's a slow paced FPS' in which case let's all break out the nightol a little early. This isn't to say that art in FPS' isn't/can't be excellent... but nobody takes the time to notice it, myself included... and I'm a freakin' game artist! It took me about a week of playing UT3 before I realised that I hadn't taken the time to actually look around.

Bioshock is the exception here, absolutely beautiful game and I made damn sure to appreciate it.

Now, art-appreciation I believe is most prominent in games where the player-view can see a lot more than what we're able to see naturally. It pretty much forces the player to appreciate it AND still be able to play the game, as opposed to stopping and looking... thus preventing play.
