Help!! Do I invest in a PC laptop or a Tower system to pursue animating?
show user profile  queen_of_fae
I am an absolute n00b and desperately need your advice,
what is the best features or reputable brand or computer type I should look into buying if I am serious about producing feature length animation of high quality etc???

Thank you in advance!

Desktop PC is a must. Laptops will just get hot and be uncomfortable when working. They are OK for on the go tweaks but for serious work you need a proper desk set up. And a nice chair :)

How much money are you willing to spend? That would determine what spec you can get for your monies.

well I am thinking $1000 - $1600,
and now that the tower set up has been suggested I could get a customised job arranged.

Another question though,
what is the best drawing tablet to go for if I was to draw and design characters/backdrops?

And can a digital image of a character be manipulated on any program in particular to 'animate' it? Or do I have to draw frame by frame like traditional?

Thank you again!

If you're new to all this, don't worry to much about 'feature length animations' yet for your computer. By the time you've learned enough, the hardware will have evolved quite a lot.

I have a wacom intuos 4 tab, and I love it... minus getting used to drawing while looking at the screen.

... Hold up now. Are you actually any good at animation or drawing? Or are you just starting out with these big ideas of producing feature length high quality animations?

Wow, too slow at typing today!

Unless you need the mobility definitely a desktop. They have always been faster larger screens...

Maybe there should be a featured post which gives the minimum and recommended requirements for 3ds Max. And maybe advice and tips on how to be a bit future proof with what you buy.

Might stop these threads from popping up all the time :p

What Stabby? I thought real artists/designers only used Apple????!?!

I mean, they look so much cooler than PCs after all, to hell with functionality... :)

BUT.. Personally, I swing more Intel than AMD (almost went AMD because of Bulldozer though, there stuff isn't bad, I just have always ran intel).

edit: Does anyone ever get upset that the Iphone doesn't have more buttons on it? I would get pissed if my android only had one dumb round button for navigation. Flaw I say!

here's me and my proud beast! renders like crazy, up to 256 bytes of ram, able to do futuristic animations in full 3D, in clarity like you've never seen before.

This is the compositing room:
