never used it but please post about it more, I'm gathering information for my pirate mod as to what engine to use. Probably won't be Source, but it can't hurt to know more about it.

Hi mattymoose, I've only just started to use it and to use it yourself you have to have steam and at least one steam game such as half life 2 or counter strike source and then you can download source sdk off steam where you can use hammer editor. Basically you can build your levels and theres a massive selection of pre made props to put in your levels but im sure you can model your own. Source is a great engine and its not too hard to pick up

I've heard its not too hard to pick up, but I've also heard its harder than Unreal. The main reason I'm interested in it is the facial animation system - the engine itself is pretty dated, but the facial animation (in TF2, specifically) is light-years ahead of any other game I've seen.

yeah its 5 years old and not as good looking as say the killzone 2 engine or the unreal engine but damn i love the physics, killzone 2 physics werent that interesting but still source is fun to design with. Do you use other game engines? do you have any idea what the problem could be with the entitys showing up as 3d errors?

when you opened hammer did you open your map under the proper game title and engine? it pulls the entities and props from folders in the sdk folders and each game has their own. you can import your own custom objects fairly easily as well and even move props from the other source games to whichever one you're working on. if you really want a detailed response to a specific question about the source engine and hammer i'd hit up their developer community page:
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page

they have documentation and tutorials that make learning it very simple.

Error just means that it wasn't found. Make sure that entity is in the folder under CounterStrikeSource/css/ModelsEntitiesOrWhatever

Its weird because in the program it specifys the location of the models or .mdl files but then when i look for it the path doesnt exist and is different from what it says in the program

Yeah the hammer editor uses a different path from the engine when you run it. It sucks I know.
