Help - cannot get a cylinder to spin on its axis properly
show user profile  magarlick
It sounds trivial, and I am sure it must be. I've been using Max for years and every so often I come across something that I just cannot get my head around. In this case I'm simply trying to animate a cylinder spinning on its axis. The cylinder is inclined relative to the home grid, which is what's causing the headache.

So here's what I've done.

1 Create cylinder and incline it to the home grid by some random amount.
2 Go to frame 1 and select auto key
3 Select the rotate tool. Make sure coordinates are set to LOCAL
4 Go to frame 100 and rotate the cylinder on its axis by 720 degrees.
5. Turn off auto key.

When I play it back, the cylinder does spin but it also precesses, as its axis changes orientation instead of staying fixed in space. Remember I used LOCAL. Why does the axis precess?

I tried adding a Linear Rotation. But then when I do that it doesn't seem to be animatable. I can't add keys in the curve editor.

So please, somebody rid me of this ridiculous headache and tell me what I'm doing wrong before I commit computercide.

Many thanks.

Thank you, Joey

I did try a dummy, but I animated its rotation hoping the cylinder would rotate with it. It didn't work. I'm educated now.

Much appreciation. :-)
