Hello, I am new to this forum.

Hi, I have been looking for a good 3ds max forum to learn and share all things max.

I have been working with max for about 7 years now (on and off) and I feel like I am just starting to understand it.

Here is a finished piece of work I completed for a music video.
I was given 6 weeks to create and produce a 4 minute CG music video for a band called The Hawklords and this is what I came up with.

This is just a brief clip, This is a low resolution clip, the final is 4x higher

I used 3ds max 2012 to create it and Vray2 for the render engine.

I am relatively new to Vray and it was a tough decision as to which render engine to go with, either Mentalray or Vray.

Apologies for the synchronisation, the video conversion in facebook caused the sound to slip by a few milliseconds. Hardly noticeable but I can see it like a sore thumb!

nice man though maybe would work better with some live action shots of the band intermixed with the cg ?

I have no idea how to composite or camera track yet. These are skills I need to address.

I gave up trying to create cars and real world objects. I find it really boring and to be honest, I am pretty crap when it comes to exact measurements.

On the subject of overlaying CGI onto real footage, what advice can you offer?
I have done a bit of research and BouJou and Syntheyes seem to be the two that everyone uses.

any help much appreciated..

Just to give you some background info

I'ma family man in my mid 40's, got interested in Max about 7 years ago and played with it sporadically until about 18 months ago, when I decided to knuckle down and learn the trade.

My interest is in animation and special effects. I can do still work, but it bores the **** out of me.

I recently discovered Vray and am getting some mixed results. I hope you like regulars, because I really need to hone some very rough skills.

you have several options (which could be inter-mixed).

1. as you've stated cg overlaid in real world scene. I don't do any of this but from listening to others sounds like you've found the right packages.

2. video of band overlaid in virtual environment. think money for nothing for example. basically video textures. easy to do. hard to do without cheese I suppose.

3. 3D interactive/immersive rock video. hybrid virtual environments. busy at the moment but we can get to this later if of interest. basically along the lines of what you have but viewer can explore/interact with the environment. maybe this would suck. dunno.

4. model band characters (or pay someone to do this) & pose/animate them within the virtual environment.

welcome disciple Phil

He who says it cannot be done is interrupting the man doing it.

Thanks to all the welcome posts.

I have been a member of Max Realms for a few years, but that site is dying a death and nobody ever visits now.

From the quality of work on this forum, I believe I have moved up a level in expertise.
Max Realms was great as a beginner to get a handle on 3ds max basics, but when things start to get serious as they appear to be with my world right now, it became a requirement to find some guys who are actively working in the industry, or producing industry standard work.

Here are a few things I aim going to tackle in the next few months, just to give you a bit of warning..

Matchmoving/camera tracking
compositing - onto real footage.
Proper rig techniques (I can rig at a basic level, but when it comes to bendy fabric or skin, I am a complete novice.
Vray skills (I just don't understand fully how it all works)
Rayfire - getting a realistic fracture/smash effect.
FumeFX - I managed to create a basic smoke ball, but that's it.
Realflow - fluid dynamics, something I have had to avoid until upgrading my machine.

thanks in advance, I look forward to learning loads..

Good to have a new member. If you ever want something modelled for free... look no further than these forums, we're a generous bunch.

^That's the guy who is hosting this forum... (are you the one that created this beast too?)..

In other words, don't get on his bad side. People tend to "disappear" around here all too often..

maybe that was a stretch.
