harpoon!

i need to create a harpoon gun that will shoot a rope from one building to another. Any suggestions? I am not really sure where to start.

first you need to model the buildings, harpoon gun and harpoon. that's where i would start. if your not sure how to start them, hit f1 for the tutorials

well i can do most of the modeling and stuff. its mostly just getting the rope to come out of the gun and look real.

I tested something for work a while back (although it was in cinema 4d) and the idea was this:

Create a spline object for the rope, then link null/helper object to the points on the spline. Next create a rigid body simulation using boxes or spheres to represent the spline points, and attach the point helpers to these. Ultimately make the rigid bodies and helpers invisible but create a simulation within reactor or whatever and the spline should follow suit..

Probably a bit overkill for the purpose, and maybe reactor rope would be quicker, but in c4d i didnt have access to reactor rope :)

Model gun, building, rope (spline), arrow. Animate the arrow. Along with the buiding and gun, create a rigid body collection. Inside the arrow's reactor properties, check "unyielding". Create a rope collection with the rope -spline-. In the rope modifier, sub object -vertex- mode, select its closest vertex to the arrow. Attach it to the rigid body -arrow.-. Preview with reactor and tweak.
