Hand-drawn look with toon shader?

I'm trying to do an animation that has this kind of hand-drawn look to it:

I'm struggling to get anywhere near it just using mental ray's contour shader though. It looks fine if I add a noise modifier to every object, but for that to work everything needs loads of polygons. That's a bit of a pain in the ass, however, because most objects are simple box-shaped objects.
Is there an elegant way to achieve this effect other than distorting the rendered images in post? From what I've seen, Cinema 4D has an awesome sketch shader, but so far I haven't found anything like that for Max :( Not for free at least.

I remember a site which had various training/guides in some max stuff, and one article in particular was about a sort've schematic/blueprint type shader/material... it required the use of a texture, I know this much. Damnit... I thought it was Neil Blevin or Jeff Patton but I really can't find it for the life of me.

Does anyone know what I'm on about? I've probably got the site and/or files on my works machine... but won't have access to that until Monday.

Here's a quick example I just made:

It would be so much easier if you didn't have to worry about everything having enough polygons and setting up the noise modifiers etc.

You should get what you want with a noise modifier applied to the camera (just in X and Y, with animated phase).
It might take a while to get the settings right though.

Yes, it's kinda difficult to get a 'small' noise with it.

I have a method I used for heat waves (it was with vray but I suppose it can be done with mr as well).
I added a transparent plane between the camera and the scene, put a noise map in the IOR slot and animated the noise vertical offset. If you animate the phase instead, you should get the esult you're after.
It was easy to adjust and had a very small overhead in render time.

That works, but unfortunately only with Max's standard ink & paint material, which doesn't produce very nice results :/ Looks like I'll have to stick with my previous method. Thanks anyway!
