After tons of help from dd heres my efforts :)
Modelled in max, rendered with fryrender
The train is an old childhood favourite of mine that comes out each year,
oh and dd rendered the final image for me as his pc does loads more in 1/2 than mine does in 6 hrs :D (oh and i only have the trial version which adds watermarks)

I like it, feels comfortably warm, but not too warm. How was the tinsel done?

Thanks guys
Dave: the tinsel is actually my personal triumph and favourite part of the image :)
ah what the hell, may as well make a tut :)
1. Created a spline to act as the path of your tinsel, make sure 'display the render mesh' is ticked, then convert it to an editable-poly.
2. Made a long thin plane with a few (6 or so) length segments, and move the pivot point to one end.
3. Create a pfsource particle object and make the spline object the emitter and the plane the particle type.
Particle birth start=0, end=0 amount: something like 5000-6000 (obviously whatever makes it bushy enough) rotation: world space 180 divergence
5 Then convert it to a mesh object via the 'mesher' compound object. (i also took this moment to hide the majority of the mesh in subobject mode as its quite a toll on the pc at this point, you can leave it hidden permanently because it renders whether its hidden or not)
6. add a noise modifier with a small value to make it more natural looking
7. Done! (just make sure you give it a 2-sided material or you'll only see half the strands

Damn, nice image, and great idea for the tinsel.
And thanks a bunch on that mesher thingie, it's exactly what I was looking for for some time now. That Pflow is a frickin powerful tool it is...I always thought that kind of things are used only for smoke, fire or such. I dowloaded all the tutorials from allan mckay's site but never got around on watching them yet.
Just one question if I may, why doesn't the 'keep apart'...ummm...I don't know the terminology yet, but anyway, why doesn't it work? It does work to some extent, but it just can't keep particles apart no matter how dense (or not dense) they are positioned.

sweet image Mr G. Has a nice 'Star Trek soft focus on guest actress ' feel to it (original series) Looks pretty damm close to the real thing. Did u just scan the cards in? also using p flow like that is great. nice one.

thanks lads! :) im well happy with it :D
horizon: yeah i only found that mesher thing about 2 days ago hah, been wanting to for aaaages. Same here about the alan mckay tuts never gotten round to doing them, i will though. and i also have the same problem with the keep apart, doesnt seem to do it, im sure its me doing something wrong though.
Joey: cheers dude, the softness was added afterwards in fryrender, is a camera effect you can add and adjust during or after the render, prety damn cool program but makes for super slow render times on my pc and pretty tricky to get the hang of.
Davious: no im too lazy to scan them in (besides i havent got any xmas cards laying about yet :) i just used my good old mate Sir Googlelot :)

Hey Mike (tinsel method) - I had to check the 'lock on emitter' (position) box to get the tinsel to stick to the string........did you? If not... why?

lol just have to laugh when looking at your sig lol
Well im guessing you are not setting the start and stop values both to 0 in the birth event? and getting the tinsel to appear by dragging the time slider? set them to 0 and it should work, all setting are as they are in the image
