Grain in Mental Ray Renders (Using Vue 7 clouds)
show user profile  Dingo
G'day guys,

Hit a speed bump using the Vue 7 plug-in for 3DSM 2008,

Getting MAJOR grain in renders using Mental Ray.

Tried new a new lens for DOF, and increasing Samples per Pixel (both Min and Max) and decreasing the Spatial Contrast values.

still no love, the render grains up and looks like crap...

Ideas?

Cheers,

Dingo

I'm not as familiar as I'd like to be with Vue, but I have had a similar issue when using HDRI backgrounds. It was caused by the camera zoom being set either too high or too low, probably the former. I'd make sure the camera is appropriately positioned as it would be in reality, and the FOV is then set to compensate for any changes.

I'm just trying Vue Xpress out so I am in no way an expert.. In the settings you can set the Vue "image samples" to be driven by mental ray's image sampling. But from the tests I've done it seems the clouds are separate from that. I had veeery low settings, and the clouds still looked fine. The rest looked like someone had run it through Photoshop's mosaic filter and blurred it.
