Good simple html editor?
show user profile  _3dioot
Hi guys,

At the moment im considering writing a html help file for a certain program. This is fun for me for multiple reasons.

- Finding out wether i still know some html
- Learning CSS
- Building a stand alone helpfile (which for some strange reason i find a cool thing to try)

With that said i really cant be arsed (there i said it) to download tons of different editors to find out what i like. Many moons ago when html was still new and wyiwyg editors were frowned upon i used a small app which didnt do an awfull lot except colorcoding my html, having some autocomplete features and, if you so wished you could pop up a html preview window to check what your html code looked like.

Something like that would be awesome. Any recommendations which save me from trying different versions would be much appreciated.

Notepad FTW.

Failing that, Dreamweaver.

There's a ton of editors that will colour code the html for you - notepad++, notepad2, etc.

The Visual Studio Express editor will also syntax check it for you in real time if you want that.

All the above are free.

yeah notepad++ rocks, its free and it highlights all the html tags in different colours so you can identify then quicker. it also groups the in and out tags with a line for easier formatting. her's a screeny...

oh and it also uses tabs for different docs and keeps them open when you next open the program, I like it lots :D

Textmate (mac)
E Editor (textmate for windows basically)

two best ever.

Failing that there is also

Crimson Editor(Windows),
Coda(Mac, awesome web developer tool, includes FTP, and many other functionalities),
Notepadd++ (Win, not a lot of auto-complete functionality, this is important when you want to write code quickly and efficiently)
Dreamweaver (not really a text editor, but it has one, and it's EXPENSIVE),

I've used Aptana studio (based on eclipse) for some web development. I mainly used python and didn't do much html editing with it, but I'm certain it's excellent for that too.
