I'm pretty sure no one has ever asked "How can I hide the gizmo?" So why did they feel the need to have it as a shortcut?

I use it a lot when modeling in user viewport + screen coordinate system. I like this shortcut :P

Useful to avoid accidentally clicking on a gizmo's axis - thus constraining the transform - when editing a model. Kind of pointless if not in screen mode, in turn kind of pointless if not in an orthographic viewport.
I can't think of any other use than that.

i find it almost the most used shortcut in max.

I find it handy because you can lock the gizmo by pressing on the arrow you want (Y), then hide gizmo (x) and then snap that vertex to another on (Y) that i want it to be inline with and then ta da, it doesnt go off in the other 2 axis, its locked to 1.

Also can be used in conjunction with Space bar (lock) which i found absolute no use for until doing architectual work, once you lock a vert, you can then select 2 other verts and it will move your vert thats locked to the exact distance between the 2 verts you selected after locking.... almost like a measuring tool. Handy tools these are.
