General vRay
show user profile  digs
I have finally adopted vRay as my primary renderer, and I'm loving it - hopefully these questions aren't to obvious, I'm just trying to understand what's happening in the engine

My first silly question has to do with prepass'

left brackets are showing the time spent, and right brackets are showing est. time remaining - but I notice that it works in reverse of how mental ray does things - it counts up instead of down

cool

I'm wondering if there are specific settings that directly effect the PREPASS, or if it's just everything generally found within the vRay GI tab?

your irradiance map low, medium, high adjust the prepasses. 4 passes means yours is probably set to high. Set it to low/medium for testing. It counts up because its still figuring out how many rays are required for the pass, then it will settle down - it usually takes alot quicker then it says.

edit: i find low Irradiance and 100 Light Cache is more then enough for testing archviz scenes. When ready up up up up up up

ok cool, good to know - medium is what I've been using but even that's a lot slower than low, go finger

thanks! I'll fill this with more randos when I get them

Have a watch of this sequence of 3 videos - they give a good set of basic render settings and will help you get to grips with process of refining a render.

is this pretty common?

it happens right after a gi finishes, like before the prepass... the renders dont look any different i dont think? not sure, have'nt tested much, but if I restart max than it seems to correct itself

thats what it looks like before it goes black

*edit* premature e-post-ulation... changed the "black" material to a vray mat ftw : /
